thoughts on ultra mags

I just put together a build using a new shilen in 7mag then I aquired a used shilen in the same contour and chambered in 300 win mag. I have been trying to trade it for another barrel but I was considering punching one of the barrels out to an ultra mag. Thoughts?

Here is my opinion. I have a 300 ultra mag, 338 ultra mag, and a 7mm Rem mag. My vanilla 7mm Rem. is my goto rifle shooting 168 and 180 bergers it is awsome. The two ultras shoot well but I am at a point in my life that I am getting tired of recoil.

A guy has to be carefull shooting RUM's.Get em hot and barrel life falls significantly.If just used for hunting,you're not really gaining much for shots under 200 yrds.That gain in velocity doesn't kill that buck any faster or better.If shooting longer than 300 yrds,the extra velocity comes into play some.If it is worth the extra recoil to you and the extra price of ammo,do it.

Here are my thoughts based on experience.
I have shot a couple of southern whitetails with the .300RUM and found it to be WAY too much gun for this size of animal (150#-250#). With a 180gr sirroco bonded it literally disemboweled them. It sucked one of thems guts out of a nearly basketball sized hole, broadside at about 250 yds. I shot one in the chest facing me the bullet traveled legnthwise through the deer and stopped between the skin and the ham nearly all the way through, and when the knife made an incision the skin promptly emptied of grape jelly. Nothing left. Keep in mind the .300RUM has as much energy at 400yds as a 30-06 has at the muzzle. The complaints of overkill has led to big green making different power levels of ammo,but who wants to pay rum price for -06 performance? Also the recoil energy is no joke either. After a range session of about 40 rounds the next day my chest was hurting. I went to the doctor and they did all the things they typically do for chest pain including an x ray. The repeated thumping from the beast had seperated my ribs from my sternum. an expensive lesson. This rifle does have a factory brake and an additional aftermarket recoil pad. The RUM cartridges are pretty expensive, not readily available at most stores, and handloading 100gr of Retumbo at a time will go through powder quicker than a German Shepherd through a hamburger. My RUM now sits in my safe awaiting one of those pesky garden rhinos.

All this really isnt the point but just things to think about. If you must have one, an aftermarket barrel or a takeoff from an edge build is probably a more practical approach.

I just aquired a new REM 700 RMEF 300 ultra mag + 1 box of shells. Did some trading at work I have $400 in it. My boss wanted to shoot it first. Here's how it went. Now he's about 6'1 190 pounds. He's has 7 mags a 300 win mag, 300 wsm. He shoots it once standing up it turns his ball cap sideways. He hands it back to me using a bunch of bad language so I hand him another shell that's followed by more bad language. I shoot it standing up then 4 more times from a bench. Was so sore the next day. My chest,neck,shoulder, felt like I had been in a car wreck.

From a standing position I put 40-50 rounds through a .300RUM with out much issue. Mine weighed no more than a stock savage factory .300 RUM when they were made. From the bench is a different story. 8-10 rounds is about all I could take with a 210gr VLD pushed by 96gr of H1000. However, it shot a .240" 3 shot group at 200yds. I made the mistake of letting it free recoil one time and I packed it back in the gun case and went home. Not sure where my brain was for that one. .338 RUM will be my next one but it will have a monster brake on it.

bought a new 7mm RUM cheap a couple years ago. shot it a few times at the bench thinking it might be a good long range gun. IT HURT and I sold it! :)

I bought a 7mm RUM off of a forum member that thought IT HURT. :D

I put a B&C DuraMaxx stock on it and shoot it occassionaly. I really don't find it too bad - no worse than my .45-70 or my .50 Beowulf.

It is way too much rifle for anything I hunt in Southern MS.

Ok, I realize a 30-378 Weatherby isn't a 300 RUM but it's close enough ;) With the factory muzzle break the recoil maybe like my 243 WSSM. And as far as being "overpowered" I totally disagree. I think that with a well placed shot there is no such thing. Just about any caliber could do huge amounts of damage to a deer. I am a huge fan of the big 30s but they need to have effective muzzle breaks!

my thoughts of what a 300 rum needs

VERY effective muzzle break

good eye relief scope

solid scope mounting system (egw and burris sig rings do just fine)

and the proper bullets for the job,a bullet to stay together is the barnes ttsx,if you want to save meat, if you want the RED MIST factor try some 125gr ballistic tips for ground hogs ;D ;D :o :o

I used 180 Accubonds on a bighorn sheep at 320 yds and couldn't have worked better!

Would you really be gaining a huge advantage to punching you 7mm or 300 magnum to a RUM? The barrels will wear faster, and the cartridges do you use powder so they cost more to shoot. A question for you is: will the calibers that I have now do the job? Just my thoughts.

He would be gaining 300+ FPS and 60" less drop at 1,000 yds with a 168 gr bullet in a .300 RUM. If we only owned what we needed to get the job done, we would all have a .308 and nothing else.

I bought a 7mm RUM a few years ago. It hurt, so I had a brake put on it. Hands down, this is my favorite rifle. The recoil was tamed to around a 270 or 25-06 level and it is accurate as hell. Yes, the .308 is accurate too I know but this gun has a sporter barrel and will shoot a .6" 3-shot group with any bullet you have laying around and do it with a Simmons Whitetail Expedition 4-12x scope. The swift scirroco's are more accurate still. I'll be keeping it and probably getting a 300 RUM barrel for my Savage rifle...

My first and only "custom" rifle is a Rem 700 in 300 RUM. I had all the action work done, a Krieger hvy 26" bbl put on and a Vais muzzle brake. It is AWESOME...it weighs around 12 lbs, but i will shoot it off of bags and let it free recoil....i know it's alot of gun, but iv'e never had an animal shot with it complain....some pics below show what being lucky looks like...rsbhunter

It has horizontal as well as vertical adjustment. I also use it for lighter
recoiling rifles during load workup. It not only takes care of up to 90%
of recoil, it takes about that much of the human error factor out of
the equation.

I have a factory 300 ultra savage. My magazine is longer than a long action magazine and is still to short for the actual throat.
The rifle need some weight to settle it down and make it not kick so hard, I added a choate varmint stock.
Ballistics wise i believe you lose energy and speed going to the 7mm vs the 30cal so go with the 300.
For something that kicks this hard id rather see a solid sturdy action like a single shot.
As for brass id rather buy lapua, so if you go with a custom id try a 300-338 lapua if you go full custom.

I am a big fan of my 300 RUM. I've shot 3 deer and a bear with it using 180 grain Scirrocos and and 180 Accubond on the bear. Went through both shoulders. Of course I'm a sissy and didn't shoot it before this was on. Can shoot it as long as my wallet can last with the break though.
