Bought another Stevens 200 a couple of days ago, going to build a .300WM from it

Here's the plan:
Stevens 200 action
CDI bottom metal
Shilen varmint barrel
Manner's MCS-T4 stock
Vortex Viper HS barrel
Surgeon bolt knob

It never ends so I don't know how you could possibly start again. Last stevens that came home with me was rebarreled, restocked and scopped in under 45 minutes from the time it got into the house. Sounds like a fun build.

I've done the same thing but with a pair of Savage Model 10 package guns from Wal-mart. Torn apart as soon as they got home.

Surgeon knob? Do tell, ya got my attention ;)

Any pics of what one of their knobs installed on a Savage bolt handle looks like?

TIA,

Monte

I don't have any pictures but I have one of the knob itself. It's the one on the top left

I like that...where do you get them? I want to replace my current bolt handle and like this idea...

I found these on Surgeons website, probably on other websites too

Yah... I could find the picture of the raw version myself. I was kind of hoping for some shots of them in actual finished condition on the gun, specifically a Savage.

you may want to look at boots bolt handles
in the fs section

Do you have a link? I can't find it.

Now I'm kind of thinking AZ Precision's bolt for the Savage, it actually looks better. Decisions decisions.

Those look pretty sweet also...

...but it brings up a point that I've been wondering for a while. Why is it, that pretty much every Savage bolt handle I see is straight out 90 degrees? On some of the Remchesters you see bolt handles with a bit of 'sweep' angle to them, which having used them a bit I honestly do find more comfortable and such. Here's a pic of what I'm talking about (pic shamelessly poached from the SH/AZ Precision thread):

Granted, the Savage bolt starts out a bit further back because it doesn't have that big ole' tail on the back end of the bolt... but still, I think some sweep angle would be more comfy.

Anyone know where I can get a bolt handle done like that for a Savage (with an angle), cuz I haven't found a place that advertises it yet...

I think it may be possible to come up with something with a bit of a sweep to it. I could probably put a slight bend into one of my handles to give you the "swept" look you are wanting. If you are interested drop me a PM and we'll chat. There is a link to my ad in the classifieds about 3 posts up if you want to take a look at what I am offering right now.

Thanks guys.

I have a couple of questions about this build project of yours.

Is the Stevens 200 you bought as the basis for this build already chambered in 300 Win Mag?

I'm considering a similar build but I'd like to convert it from a Win-Mag to 300 WSM. My lack of experience with
Savage rifles has me concerned that the magazine would be different and in need of replacement
or modification or both.

My next question is about the aftermarket bolt-knobs pictured in this post. Are they made to be
threaded onto the end of the existing bolt handle somehow? I made a similar bolt-knob for one of my
remingtons.

I had to turn down the end of the existing bolt-handle and thread it to accommodate the new bolt-knob.

It's a .270 right now, just need to change the bolt head. For a WSM I think you need a large shank rifle.

I'm pretty sure the mag would need to be change but I'm going with a CDI DBM so it doesn't really matter in my case.

I think just thread the bolt handle and screw it on a TIG weld it. I'm sending mine to AZ Precision to let them do it because I'll probably screw it up and I don't own the tools to do it.

I have a question also; How much did the Stevens cost? Considering all you are going to keep is the action, would it have been less expensive to have purchased just an action from Northland Shooters Supply?

You dont have to have a large shank for a WSM, although most likely all of the factory WSM barrels you find will be large shank.

Seems like I remember reading that they did make small shank WSM rifles for a year or two, but I could be wrong.

With a custom barrel it does not matter.

I think there is something about the firing pin assemble when going to the magnum, IE it should be changed.
You might want to ask SSS.

The firing pin has to be changed if you make a WSM out of a short action!! If its a long action all you have to do is get a push feed magnum bolt head

Nope, they are/were on sale at Academy for $179. So when you sale the barrel and stock and trigger it's like $100-$110
