Savage 110 in Local Pawnshop

Hello there, first time poster here!
I am going to build a .260 Remington off of a Savage or Stevens action. I was going to order the gun new from Walmart or somewhere similar, I called and they have the Stevens 200 for $321. I went to a local pawnshop today and they have an older Savage 110 pre-accutrigger w/ wood stock in 7mm Remington Mag for $210 out the door. It is in decent shape, but the bolt body does have some rust and a little pitting on it. Do you guys think this would be a good choice to build off of? I imagine I could get a new bolt body if need be. I will be changing the barrel, so pitting/rust in there isn't an issue.

Most people would build a .260 Rem on a short action. That pawnshop gun is a long action.

Buy the pawnshop one for a LA build later on and the new M200 one for your .260 build.

As mentioned by the other posters, the Pawnshop gun would work for a build for a long action. However, you will need to change the bolt head as well if using for any other cartridge other than a magnum case. None of the 30-06 variants (25-06, 270, 280, etc...) nor none of the .308 variants (.243, 260, 7mm-08, etc...) would work with this bolt head. Not a real issue as you can change these, but it would involve more than just a barrel swap out unless you are using a cartridge of the same bolt head.

I build everything on long actions. Short actions are a hassle.

Get the long action.

Changing the bolt head adds about another 10 minutes and 30 bucks.

on't know where you are located, but if you have Acadamy Sports stores in your area, they were (last week) selling Stevens 200 in 270 and 7/08 for $179.00!!! I bought a 270, and wish i had bought one or more of each!!!! Can't find a donor action for that price.....didn't want this to get by you if you are near one of there stores....rsbhunter

Jeez! That's crazy cheap. Unfortunately, they don't have Academy here in Utah. Thanks for all the responses. I will probably hold off on that rifle, but I think I will end up getting a long action just because I have heard that they're easier to work with and .260 reloads can get pretty long if you're loading close to the lands. Also, as long as I'm bugging you, would you guys consider $330 for a left-handed, wood stock, accutrigger 110 a good price. It's also in 7mm mag and it would be my first left-handed gun.

The box from Numrich arrived today with the stock that will allow me to finish my .260 build...on a 110 long action.

Savage built rifles for years with only a long action, so building a 308-based rifle on a 110 action ain't no big deal.

Haha what's your reasoning? I know it's a little more efficient, but from what I've heard, the .260 has better barrel life and the brass is easier to come by. Can you even find 6.5x55 brass or would you have to resize or fire form?

6.5x55 brass is easy to find. Midway sells 5 brands including Lapua.
They sell 3 brands of .260.

According to my Lyman Reloading Manual, the .260 Remington shoots a 120gr. Ballistic Tip at 2799 fps with 40.5gr. of N150. The 6.5x55 shoots the same load at 2652 fps. Both rifles were 24" barrel length. So do people just think the Swede is more accurate?

"Those loads are for century-old Mausers and not much stronger, modern actions that can take a lot more pressure, which is where the Swede really starts to shine over the 260"...or so I've heard the argument go ;D

Why not go with 6.5-284 or 6.5-06 if all you care about is wringing the last bit of velocity out of a 6.5mm bullet? If accuracy is the goal, 6.5 Creedmoor might be one of the best things going.

That isn't what I was trying to get at. I was just trying to figure out why people are so fond of the 6.5x55 Swede. I would like a rifle that doesn't burn a ton of powder, has good barrel life, that is good for long range, is accurate, and the components are readily available. I figured the .260 because of the high ballistic coefficient and accuracy. I am open to any opinions or ideas because I haven't ordered a barrel yet.

The 6.5 x 55 Swede has character.

The 260 Remington is a fine target cartridge, but has no character.

I'm getting 2850 fps with 140 gr. bullets out of my Swede with a 26" barrel without pushing them hard. And as stated above brass is readily available.
