Everyone knows that the proper bullet for a 6.5 mm is a 160 grain roundnose -- FMJ or SP.

I vote for the .260, character is swell but has little to do with putting meat in the pot.

Listen to what they are telling you about the 6.5 swede. I have built over 100 of them, they will outrun the 260, do it with lower chamber pressure/longer barrel life, and shoot way better than 90% of the shooters out there can do, go with a 8 or 7 an1/2 twist. I built my first one in 1985, she is still shooting 1/2 MOA, aftr nearly 5000 rounds! You can buy, Rem., Winchester, federal and Lapua brass for the swede.

According to my Lyman Reloading Manual, the .260 Remington shoots a 120gr. Ballistic Tip at 2799 fps with 40.5gr. of N150. The 6.5x55 shoots the same load at 2652 fps. Both rifles were 24" barrel length. So do people just think the Swede is more accurate?

"Those loads are for century-old Mausers and not much stronger, modern actions that can take a lot more pressure, which is where the Swede really starts to shine over the 260"...or so I've heard the argument go ;D

That info is EXACTLY correct BoilerUP. Reloading manual data IS geared toward older actions that are not as strong as modern action. Check the CUP or PSI ratings of the load.

The 6.5x55 AI that I build on a Savage, easily pushes the 140/142's in the 3K+ territory.

My pet load for my Mauser 96, is pushing the Sierra 120 gr Sp at 2950, worked up caefully to this, and shoots tiny little groups, and kills deer out to 470 yards, farthest I ever shot at one. I have a Douglass bull barrel, 8 twist on a Sav. 110, max loads are hotter than this, no pressure signs and scary accurate. I have 6 of the 6.5 swedes, and never saw the need for the .260, just another selling point. For something that is hotter, you need a 6.5 x55 AI or instead of all the hassle fireforming, do what I did, build a 6.5x284, neeter, sweeter, and more completer!!!

Haha, 470 yards! That's impressive. I am going to do the doe deer hunt in Wyoming this fall and I think I am going to try some long shots with my 6.5x55. Have a lot of you 6.5mm shooters tried long range shots on deer or antelope? I am trying to decide on an ethical distance. I have a friend with a 260 AI who shoots antelope at 600 yards.
