Hello! I've been reading and still have some specific questions on rebarreling to a 35 whelen.

1. Donor gun.. does it have to be a 110 if I use an er shaw kit (if I can find one) or will one of the axis work? On their site it says they don't offer fitment for axis rifles but doesn't say anything about whether their kits will work on one.

2. Can it be any long action caliber? .270, 30/06 etc..?

3. If I get a hold of said kit,is it just the barrel swap, check with the gages and im done? Any modification to the bolt, magazine etc..? Or swap the barrel and go shooting?

Here in iowa we're a straight wall only state but they allow a .35 whelen for whatever reason. I wanted something that I can keep light weight and still hammer deer hard with a good blood trail and that kept leading me back to the .35 whelen.. I've owned a .450 bushmaster and wasn't a fan.

The Axis will work. Both the 110 & Axis share the same barrel, the barrel nut & bolt head. Yes, any long action will work. You will need a bolt head for 30-06 cartridge as the 35 Whelen uses the 30-06 as parant case.

Be sure that the barrel has a small shank. The Axis uses a small shank barrel and the 110 could use a small or large shank depending on the year it was manufactured and the caliber it was chambered in. At least that’s what is in the FAQ section.

Should be able to use it from a 270 or a 25/06 as well, shouldn't i?

Ok last question... I thought I read something about magazine modification or something around those lines with the axis,is this true? Any other mods on the axis in particular besides a barrel swap?

Outside of that with the 110 or axis, will the factor magazine work for .35 whelen?

Lastly, will those barrel kits work on a 111 or just the 110 and the axis? Just searching for a donor rifle

With the Axis/Edge, it depends on if you start with a Short or Long Action. The Axis/Edge is the same Action no matter short or long. The only difference is the magazine & trigger guard. If you start with a Long caliber, you are GTG. If you get a short Action, you must change the magazine & trigger guard.

Yes, it will work on the 111. The Savage 110-116 are ALL the 110 Action. They just have different features; barrels, mag setups, etc.

If they allow a 35 Whelen they may allow the 358 Winchester. Just another option.
Although the Whelen gives you another 200 fps across the board. Find a 111 and
give NSS a call.

I thought the Axis short action stock mag well was shorter than the long action Axis stock.

Yes, sorry.. I was talking about the Action only. The stocks are different obviously.

Another question since 358 winchester is legal... what would it take to swap say a 308, 243, etc... to 358 winchester? I'm assuming 358 is short action? Just a barrel swap?

Yessir... Barrel swap is all that is required for this one. 308 IS the parent case.

Last question.. do you have a list of calibers that the bolts are compatible with a .358 swap so I know what cartridges to keep an eye out for in a donors rifle?

358 Winchester uses the .308 Winchester as the parent case. Any cartridges that use the .308 Winchester will be suitable.
The info you seek is available via a search on the internet as I am just to lazy to type any more.

You will be better served if you look for a short action if you settle on the 358 Winchester.

.338 Federal is not a bad option. “An in between”. More bullet choices than .358, yet still heavier than .30cal offerings.

Or you could do the 284 Win, the cartridge I would judge to be a candidate for GOAT. SOO ahead of its time. Introduced in 1963 with a NO taper case & 35 degree shoulder; things which were virtually unheard of at the time. Although our paths have crossed times in the past, I’ve only known it in depth over the last 8 years. And by this time I was already in love with 6.5mm bullets. I wish I had known of the 284 20+ years ago. I would have stocked up on components & such for it & never looked back, as I am a subject of habit...quite loyal.

First thank you everyone for your responses. Been a little busy. But today I got my project off to a start as I picked up an older model 11 in 243 that for all arguments I can make has never seen a full box run through it. Absolutely beautiful shape. With a scope mounted I picked it up for only 250 bucks.

So ill be going with 358 winchester. I noticed on ER shaws barrel options page it asks for long or short shank which from here I know how to find out with the barrel nut. There is also an option for "older 110 with countersink bolt"... can anyone tell me about that?
