220 swift

Do i do this build on a long or short action? Would like it to be a repeater. What is the cost of the machine work needed to make a target action a repeater? Is it worth the cost of maching ? BEsides fred who else can t&t a savage action? How long can i expect it to take? I know lots of questions but I got bit by the swift bug bad yesterday ;D Had a chance to shoot my buddies rem 220 swift and wow i love it! Just refuse to build or buy a remington when i can get one done with savage and do most work myself. I know one thing for sure i would like to shoot the 75gr amax im thinkin so it will be a 8 or 9 twist. What length barrel? 24?26?

I just went down this road about a month ago. What you want is a long or medium action for the Swift. It will work in a short action but it will be uncomfortable loading.

Mine was a short action 10fp. I decided to go with a .22-250, but I sure wanted that Swift. If you do decide to go the Swift route I'd like to hear about it.

Savage never made a "Medium" action. A long time ago Savage offered the 1st generation short action, (Some people call it a "J" series) it was truly a long action, but they machined the action to use a shorter magazine box. The 1st gen shorts also have a diferent bolt spacing, which makes the only stock option a custom made stock.

Fred Moreo came up with the "Time and Truing" concept, most gunsmiths dont understand the concept of timing. Most gunsmiths use what works on a Remington and adapt it to a Savage, the problem is, the two are as different as night and day. What it all comes down to is, do you want it done right, or do you want it done fast? There is a reason why Fred stays so busy.

Bobcat, Spoke w/ Jim @ NSS last wk. He had a Stnls. single shot in 220 swift for sale. In terms of converting it to mag. feed, can you say mega bucks! Also look for 22/250 or better yet, 22/250AI for cartridge comparable to the Swift.

for now i am hooked on the swift. Buddy has the rem sendaro in swift and for purposes of bragging and sayin i told ya so i am going to build one on savage platform and out shoot him for less money!!!!! just somethn we started a while back and so far i am up 4-3 !!!

Another you might consider...

223 AI runs 69 gr Nosler or Sierra HPBT's at 3300 from 26" 1:9 twist barrels.

222 Magnum AI runs 80 gr AMax at 3150 at 3150 from a 28" 1:8 twist barrel.

.....and both do this with significantly less powder than the Swifts/x-250/necked down 243's/xx-6mm's.

But, that Swift song is a hard tune to forget.

runnin a 204 at the moment also. How much more can the 222 ai do than the 204?

yeah the swift is a dieing breed around where i live, so it would be a conversation piece at the range also i guess

3 swifts, only one 22-250 and one 22-250ai. the ai is faster, but it is not a swift :)

Remington catalogs 2 chamberingings in Swift, a 700 SF VS and SF VS II. You won't be happy with the SF VS, the SF VS II is a beautiful rifle with HS stock. The price of these is about $1000.

Sadly Savage no longer chambers the Swift as a factory available option. If they did I would have had one.

I settled on the .22-250, very close and easy to get components for.

i am capable of putting one together, just get a long action barrel stock of choice top of the line optics. Can a guy use the 308 family mag?

Build it on a 110 long action. Talk to Devin at Sinarms or Jim at Northlander about a barrel (stainless, 26 to 28"). Offhand, I dont have the cartridge specs available but, you should be able to tweek a 30-06 mag to feed the Swift rounds IIRC.

I'd like to hear how you make out on your project. If I would have had the long action I would have just purchased an aftermarket barrel for the Swift. You're lucky as I see you already have a long action.

Don't know much about 220 Swifts and in particular Swifts built on Savage actions...

But think that one on a long action might work.



Stay away from them long 75 grain bullets.

Proper respect for the Swift requires 48 grain Winchester soft points...


Sort of like 7 x 57 Mausers and 175 grain bullets. They were meant for each other.

Have two original 112 J series in 220 swift. One is a single shot and one is a repeater. If you look you might be able to find one and rebarrell. I have a bull barrel coming in 220 from shilen, and a target action waiting for it. I know that is doable because I have two 6.5x284s in the short target action and they have a larger overall length than the 220 swift and I don't have a problem. I would think twice about doing a repeater though. The swift isn't a forgiving cartridge to feed out of mag, takes some tweaking because of the rim.

just bought a set of dies for RCBS FL Die Set .220 Swift Imp 40 $31- LOL now I need to rechamber a barrel! There not as fast as the .22-250AI but it will be a lot cooler!!
