release agents

I read on 6BR site from Rich Franklin, that he uses shoe polish as a release agent. But then I saw from BRS custom rifles, rifflar.com and it looks like he uses a spray of some kind of car polish maybe. I looked it up.

I think I would like to go the spray route only because of the voids in the action verses Franklin bedding his BAT actions with one void. ;D

What do you all use?

I use Pam.

I used the blue liquid that comes in my kits. I let it dry and reapply, then after it is completely dry I spray it down with Pam non-stick cooking spray. I amsure it is overkill but I would hate to have my action permanently stuck in a stock.

+1 - only I use "olive oil" pam.

Use play-doh to plug holes and make any dams you need.

I have done about a dozen rifles now and this works great. I have never glued one in and they always come out tight.

Kiwi Neutral Shoe polish, has worked for me on at least 5 different bedding jobs. Four Savage and one Anschutz.

Synlube 531 in the 14oz aerosol spray can. It is an industrial mold release agent. WOW would be an understatement.

+2 on the Kiwi and I also use Johnsons's Paste wax. I started using the Kiwi maybe 5-6 years ago, the paste wax for at least the 20 years.

I use Kiwi Neutral shoe polish as a release agent for Devcon Steel Bedding. I quit using modeling clay to plug holes - too messy. If you're careful with it, you can cover all the gaps around the magazine and the slits in the rear of the action with electrical tape. I use electrical tape for the recoil lug , stock screws and barrel nut also - it's easier to use than masking tape and holds the release agent well. I've never stuck any tape into the bedding since I switched - can't say that about masking tape....
