Well guys I tore the stock off my 18 year old 110 30-06 that had seen better days for sure. Not expecting much since it's just factory wood.

I spent the better part of 3 hours sanding, wetting and drying and sanding some more. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160530/076d7bd5d8550a87a660456390f56990.jpg

I got it super smooth and brought what grain I think was going to come out, out.

Hand rubbed in some minwax "gun stock" stain.

Plan to let it dry a few days and start hand rubbing in some boiled linseed.

Am I missing anything? I don't usually do this but the sun was shining and felt like a good project to do while sitting in the yard!!

Thanks

Looks like a new stock again. Good job. Some factory savages have very nice grain hiding in them.
Here's mine

It's from a 110e .270Win so it should have been the cheapest of the cheap but I got lucky. I paid $140 for the gun from a local gun shop, $130 for the Leupold VX I 3-9x40 from the same shop and like $15 for the ironsighter scope base, $15 for the Browning sling brand new from a gun show and I had the rings. So I'm only $300 into it but I'll never sell it anyways.

That is just absolutely beautiful. This was the very first gun I ever got. I got it for Christmas when I was 12, 18 years ago!

I got mine after I graduated college at 29 and was bored and unemployed. I decided I was going to give deer hunting another try(I went hunting 2 years when I was 13 and 14 and got nothing but cold).
that was my first deer 3 years ago

Well I hope your hooked now! As soon as deer season ends, I start planning and testing new loads for my rifle for the next! That looks like a giant doe btw!!

She was decent. I think mid 150lbs and I've killed others 3 with it now and I got my buddy his first deer with it last year a small buck at 187yds and I've since taken up bow hunting last year and got my first doe last year.

I'm building a 7.62x39 now for this upcoming season. Barrel had to go back to Apache to get reprofiled (.750 at muzzle hog hunter profile)

Beautiful!! Never been a 270 man myself, not a thing wrong with them. I think generally most people tend to favor the calipers/chamberings of our fathers, uncles grandfathers etc. which for me was 308 and 30-06, I favor heavier bullet going slower but a long shot for me is 50 yards.

My dad won a Savage 110 30-06 at a fair raffle 19yrs ago for $1. He doesn't know it yet but I have got him a new stock and am currently working it over for his birthday in August since his has some character to it now. I have to find a hinged floorplate

Same here I have about 100yds on a lucky day to shoot so my 7.62x39 should be good

It's a $20 stock from Numrich. VERY rough when I received it. But it's shaping up

I'm gonna shoot all the metal with matte black duracoat and mounting a micro red dot on the front scope mount. Will reload heavy 220gr bullets . Almost a dangerous game gun for non dangerous game

I've been tossing the idea around of having the whole thing re-blued by a local smith since he's almost rubbed all the finish off

If your into little projects buy a birchwood Casey revalue kit! I have used one before with good results!
