so today schnyd112 and i went out and shot a few rounds...he just got his rifle back from the smith we use here...ill post what i know and he can fill in the rest...i was just out to fire form some brass for my new build(which i dont have yet but want to be able to go right into load development when its ready).

his rifle...
remington action all trued
PT&G full bolt assembly lugs lapped
28" bartlein heavy varmint chambered with my 260 rem reamer
jewell trigger
night force base
vortex rings
vortex scope...not sure what model but needs a better scope LOL
and an HS stock i think...but he needs a new one of these too

he shot an OCW with H4831sc,1x fired fully prep'd lapua brass,CCI BR2s,and a 142gSMK seated .020 off the lands...this was shot at 100yds just like an OCW but 5 rounds at each target...the wind was blowing about 15+mph...im impressed!!!

this kid can shoot...

pick a load because anyone one of these can be tuned to shoot with #5 and #6 being the two hes going to work with...

we didnt chrony any of these as he was looking for a load first but i think #6 is going to put him at the velocity he is looking for.

im almost embarrassed to post my raggedy a$$ target...the only thing that makes it ok is i was fire forming, shooting some old 139g lapuas and alco bullets and all 100 charges were just dropped from the lee PPM not weighed...

5 20 shot groups...

Definitely looks promising. Good news for you if his work always gets consistent results like this!

I found a load in about 40 rounds with the barrel he chambered for me on my savage comp rifle...980 rounds with that same load and will still shoot a .295 5 shot group at a 100yds.
he makes his money on pistol work as he builds custom pistols but he's built several BR rifles and I think after this comp season he is going to be busy building rifles.

Only 40rds...... That has to be a new record for you. I broke my current barrel in during a long range steel match and took 3rd. So I fine tuned that load and ran it up to 1000rds before I had to make adjustments.

Yes this load shot so well I never messed with it...980 and every thing is the same as at the beginning.
i remember you shooting and breaking in the barrel at a match but the thing is you already had a load that was working so it just transferred over.

I only knew approximately what I needed to rea h the velocity I was looking for. Had no idea if it would shoot yet though!

See I'm not that lucky lol...its been tough not playing around with this one for me.

If it's working.... Leave it alone! That's why I need to build a practice rifle! Later this year lol.

Agreed...and why I'm either going to keep my long action or buy a cheap 260 for my tweaking...or maybe(as much as I hate to say it)a 308.

Lol, my 308 barrel just sold!

The ONLY reason I say 308 is barrel life...I could do a lotta playing with 4-5000 rounds.

Try 223ai. Same drop to 600yds as the 6mm or 6.5SAUM. Great practice in the wind too! I'm thinking about going that route and it's cheap to shoot as well.

Oh I see trying to get me into another build huh?
i have been kicking around the idea of buying a pawn shop remmy short action and then set back my comp barrels and putting them on the pawn shop remmy as a practice rifle.

Re visit the 308. You may surprise yourself. This is the reason I went back to my 223 target gas guns. I'm sending them out to 700 easily. I'm sure the hell happy I didn't sell them off when I got into my bolt gun craze. Great fun, great practice, and it doesn't bust my wallet.
Great shooting Dave.......now go build another one! Lol

the first target is not mine or my rifle and our local smith built it...im just pretty impressed with the accuracy of the rifle...8 different charge weights shot round robin just like an OCW but 5 shots at each dot and not 1 group is bigger than an inch except for #8 and if measured from center hole i bet its at 1 inch or just a hair over.

Thanks for takin the time to write that up LR. I am great full you have put up with all my questions and bs tying to get this built.

The rifle started life as a rem 700 varmint in .220 swift. I bought it in 2004, the summer after high school. A friend and I would vaporize ground squirrels every chance we got. We eventually taught ourselves to call coyotes and it did a number on them as well. I started getting serious about reloading for it a couple years ago and shooting competitively last year. I was shooting a little tiny bullet really fast at ranges out to 650. It started to get a little unpredictable as the year went on and the round count approached 3000. After the first long range varmint silhouette match I was hooked on the long range game and started looking for a cartridge that would be more versatile than the swift. When shooting 600 yards in 20 mph winds, I was seeing 45+ inches of wind drift. Looked at 7-08 because 7mm bullets are awesome but, being a speed freak, I didn't think they were moving fast enough. I shot and hunted with a .243 as a kid so was going to stay away from 6mm. I wanted to go .260 ai but after talks of short barrel life, fire forming and cost of dies I decided .260 was the way to go.

I I used a reamer from longrange and knew I wanted a long heavy bartlein barrel. Sierra bullets have always been good to me so I set my sights on the 142 smk's. i had it throated it for the smk's and prepped brass while I waited. It took some will power to not take a couple days off of work once I got it back but I finally made it to the weekend. I went out and shot 40 rounds to sight in and get used to things then went and shot with longrange on Sunday. I could not be more pleased. It took months to get money and parts together but finally I have my gun, built to my specs and in my safe!

the scope is a vortex viper hs-t 4-16x44. It looks kinda funny because the objective has almost the same girth as the barrel at the shank. At this point I have not seen a scope that is significantly better unless I spend $1500 so I will stick with it for now.
