well fellas looks like im going to have to start bashing savage with the rest of the cool kids LOL!! J/K...i couldnt resist.

so ive been talking about this for some time as most of you know and its starting to come together now...i REALLY wanted a mausingfield M5 but things just didnt work out that way for a few reason but i will most likely build off an M5 later this year.

so this was my second choice...the tried and trued Surgeon 591...

specs when done...
surgeon 591 repeater
Jewell HVR trigger set to 10oz to 1lb
XLR chassis
1 10 round AICS mag and 1 5 round AICS mag
folding tactical butt stock
atlas bipod
vortex gen2
ARC M10 rings
first barrel will be a 26" heavy varmint Kreiger
second barrel will be a 26" heavy varmint bartlein
both barrels will be chambered with my reamer at the same time...both tight neck 260rems...the chassis is still about 2wks out which is perfect as my smith said about 2wks...

Well ain't that pretty. You will definitely be doing some savage smashing after you get used to the Jewell. That action looks just about bomb proof.

cant wait to squeeze that Jewell...it's set to 1lb from the factory so we will see...I like 10oz...it feels bomb proof at 3lbs...still not sure on color...I'm thinking stainless or satin aluminum on the action body black on the bolt and bolt release button...leave the knob stainless the barrel stainless with a black JP recoil eliminator.

and FYI i seen your action bolt and barrel...it's gonna be a hammer!!

****! Jealous here! Why kreiger and bartlein barrels?

ive wanted to shoot a kreiger for a long time and have seen how several shoot so I thought why not I already know what a bartlein does...I'm having both chambered at the same time so when it's time I can just spin the new one on myself...the Kreiger will be here Monday so I'll drop it all off to the smith and our cerakoate guy is right behind the smith so it will go there next...hoping to have it running in 3wks.

I'm looking to pull my Rifle apart after the match on Sunday and send my action off for Cerakote. Think I'm just going to have the whole action and bolt done in Armor Black. Then I may have the Chassis coated down the road as well. We'll see on the Chassis though!

Sounds like an awesome setup LR. Looking forward to seeing the finished product

I got the call today for my final specs. I've got 75 pieces of brass sized trimmed and turned ready to go. I would like to get it all coated, but once it's together I'm not sure I will want to take it apart. My thought was dark gray barrel/ action with a black bolt and handle, but f it. I want to shoot.

just a recommendation here LW...you may want to take a look at the DLC coating...thats what Ted recommends and what the M5 i got to fondle at the F-class last weekend was coated with...the kid said the DLC coating made it even smoother if thats even possible...im still looking into the DLC coating but it dont seem like a lot of places are doing it...im going to ask the guy here local if he knows anything about it.

thanks hefe and me too...

just know the first time you squeeze the trigger that i cycled your bolt before you did LOL!!

Dans shop is right behind jacks and if you call him or stop by im sure he could get you taken care of in 2 days but MAKE SURE you talk to jack first to make sure theres clearance enough for coating...i dont know how tight he/you ordered your bolt and i think you need about .004 extra clearance for coating other wise you end up with a sticky bolt.
i was over there yesterday talking to jack for about a half hour...he took me back and showed me how he sets up a barrel for chambering...all i can say is the guy is a perfectionist,VERY OCD about how he does things and has a true love for what he does.

are you having him thread the barrel for a break?

I know all about the DLC coating. Word over on the Hide is that recent batches of actions getting DLC coating were showing that quality was starting to drop off.

I'll be within 2hrs of the shop in NC that Ted recommends, but I've played with a cerakoted M5. Maybe a hair stickier than my inflated, but with a little breaking in I don't think it will be noticeable. Also Cerakote is about $100 less than the DLC process.

gothca...another tip and what i did...get a small tube of dry graphite and lightly coat the inside of the action and the outside of the bolt put the bolt in the action and cycle it about 50 times and then blow the action out and blow the bolt off..my PTA was a little sticky after coating it and this smoothed it out like it was before coating.

I'm going to send it to Short Action Customs for coating. Those guys know what they're doing!

No break. I just haven't shot enough with one to appreciate what it does. Fairly light round with a heavy rifle I should be fine.

i talked to the coating guy today at the practice match and he said micro slick cerakoate is the ticket for the action and bolt...said its real thin so it soaks into the pours and it's real smooth...I'm going to have him do the inside of the action and the bolt body in this 591.

yeah you'll be fine...I shot 5 barrels without breaks and may go breakless on this one.

It may depend who does it, but heard the micro slick has not stood the test of time with guys who actually work their rifles.

the coating guy kinda said the same thing...its because it goes on so thin and it dont texture(so to speak)...im only doing the inside of the action so we will see...if it dont hold up ill do something different when i swap barrels.

on a side note we had a great practice match yesterday(30 shooters)cold and windy LOL...ill post a thread latter on...i gotta go get after this loading by volume thing.

So after all that testing with the AI you're sticking with old faithful PJ260??

LongRange
02-29-2016, 11:08 AM
yes...that 260AI barrel only lasted about 800(pretty accurate)rounds...at 900 it wouldnt shoot better than about a 2-3" group at 100yds so i think a 260AI barrel would only be good for about 1400-1600 rounds...i was talking to a guy that shoots a 260AI and he said he had 1400 through his and still accurate but was only shooting about 2900.

plus im all tooled up for the PJ260 and have it pretty much down to a T...i did order this action with a 59 firing pin so at some point i may do a 6x47L.

the kreiger barrel came in yesterday so everything is going to the smith today...he is finishing up another rifle today or wednesday and will be on mine so im hoping the chassis will show up about the same time the action is done being cerakoted.
