So this afternoon I went out and put a few rounds through my new 6.5 Creedmoor. I just got a brand new CBI barrel from Jim at Northland, its 26" varmint contour that I had Cerakoated flat black. I loaded up 4 rounds each of 43.5 grains of IMR 4350 up to 44.5 grains and the same thing using Reloader 17. 4 of the groups measured under .6" and three of those were .4" groups. All shot from a bench of a Caldwell Rock and a rear sand bag at 100 yards.

This got me to thinking... not always good.... But this is the 4th Creedmoor that I have put together and ALL 4 shoot well under a half inch at 100 yards! That is OUTSTANDING and makes me not like my 1 moa guns much anymore. I have shoot a couple of groups with this rile in the .1's but most run from the low 4's to about .65ish.... again that is amazing. Bullet choice hasnt made much difference either. It will shoot like that with the Hornady 123 Amax or the 140 Amax. Just have to love a rifle that will shoot anything.......

I just love my CBI barrels..... counting this new Creedmoor I now have 6 of them and they all shoot under 1/2moa....... Thank you guys

Ryan

Awesome! I too have a 26 inch heavy varmint that I haven't gotten a chance to shoot yet. I have a stack of 140 ELD-M ready to go though.

Hope your results repeat in mine.

I built a 6.5CM a couple months ago and went with a 26" bull CBI barrel with 1:7.5 twist on it. Just ordered the scope earlier this week but unfortunately it will take 4-5 weeks to get here as it is on backorder. Then, just need to get to the range and shoot, but with the temps outside, I may wait until mid-March to do that.

I also have high hopes for the new 140 gr ELD Match bullets from Hornady, but will be pushing mine with H4895 as H4350 is impossible to find for me at the moment and I have an unopened 8lb jug of 4895 sitting around.

I would love to hear your results with the new Hornady bullet. I have 200 of em but I havent shot any yet. Im gonna miss the 140 Amax, hoping the load data will be close with the new ones.

According to the rep I spoke to when I called Hornady, the load data is identical. Their test results were nearly identical and they are not changing load data at all for the new ELD line.

Jay, What optic did you order for that 6.5 CM?

Vortex Viper HS-T 6-24x50 with MOA reticle. It is the same exact scope as the Viper PST that is all the rage right now, but without the illuminated reticle which I did not want.

One of our fine vendor sponsors of this site sent an email out with an unpublished sale announcement for 15% off all optics. I jumped all over it. They even offered me the discount despite the fact that the sale was for "in stock only" merchandise and my scope was not in stock if I pre-ordered it from them while on the phone. Should be here around mid-February.

Jay24bl,

You will love that scope. I am running the same scope on my rile. I went back and forth on the hs-t or the PST and like you decided that I too didnt not need the illuminated reticle.

Thats exactly the same scope I'm thinking about getting. Been looking at all the different scopes and features for the last 4 months. Its the only one I can find with the features I want.

+100 there, this is not the first time I have worked with him and every time has exceeded my expectations. Not to mention they always have a ton of open box/demos available at prices that can not be beat.

Have any of you shot out a CBI barrel yet? I am curious to know what people are getting for round count? I have a 26" CBI barrel in .260 with about 1000 rounds through it. Had a gunsmith take a look at the crown and chamber the other day and he said all looks great. Before looking at the barrel he also said they are about 800 round barrels, which seemed really low to me.

800!?! I'm thinking above 2k is reasonable. And that's probably still MOA

id find another smith...not the same barrel(shilen)but the same cal...i had 2800 rounds through it but never hot rodded then had it set back and rechambered to 260AI and shot 900 more through it before things started going south.
depending on how hot your loads are and what type of shooting you do with the rifle you should get 2000 very accurate rounds and close to 2800-3000 before things get real unpredictable.

800!?!? I would question his experience with rifle barrels. Heck, with "break-in" and load testing it is feasible to go through 150 rounds. I highly doubt CBI would have the reputation they do if you needed a new barrel after 800 rounds. While this is my first CBI so I can not speak to the life of it, it sure as heck better be two or three times that many rounds.

I agree that he is misinformed about the round count and yes, it has caused me pause about his qualifications as a gunsmith. It sounds like I should get 2000+ rounds w/out too much trouble. I don't shoot hot loads and I let the barrel cool after strings of fire (up to 5 shots at a time in a string).

you should get around 2500 plus or minus a few...i shoot F-class(20 shot strings)and long range matches(10 shot stings)and run hot loads and get 2000 to 2200 out of a barrel before accuracy really starts to become noticeable...and maybe the smith was confusing your rifle with a 6.5 284.

how its shot makes a big difference i shot out a 6.4 creedmoor cbi with about 1700 rounds down it but i shoot a match where we shoot 45+ rounds in 40 minutes and its hard on a barrel. that any the fact that when the conditions are right i have finished in 27 minutes
