So this fall I was hunting with my Savage 116 classic. I love that gun. But at 35° it was raining, then the temp started to drop and it turned to sleet, then dropped some more and it was a blizzard. After dark when I finally called it quits and got out of the tree my beloved pretty Savage was covered in a thick layer of ice and about 4" of snow! I decided never again am I treating it like that. I looked at all my options and decided I was going to part out part of my .45 smokeless build I did a few years ago since I had moved on and don't shoot it. I wanted to build a short barreled gun for the woods that I wouldn't have to worry about getting in the snow, rain, mud, or whatever.
I had Scope eye hook me up with the barrel and Jim at Apache did the work. It's really a work of art. If it shoots like it looks I'll be in good shape. I moved the Bushnell 4200 that was on my '06 to this one as the rainguard should help with its purpose. I moved the Zeiss that was on this action over to the '06. And it looks good on there.

The action is a Stevens 200
SSS fluted bolt
Recoil lug and nut from NSS
Rifle basix trigger
Duramaxx stock
6.5 Creedmoor 18" barrel

Here it is next to the '06 with a 22" barrel

Ouch! I gotta admit I laughed and thought oh no when the package came. The photos don't do it justice in just how short the rig really is. As far as balance goes it feels great just playing around with it. I'll know more once I get it out and start shooting it.

x2. I'm thinking the short barrel is going to negate some of the things that make the Creedmoor advantageous compared to other cartridges.

I bet he will still be able to send those 120s over 2900fps, that barrel has 95s and 107s written all over it.

Yeah I knew I was going to sacrifice some velocity going with a short barrel. But I don't have access to a range over 200 anyway. Maybe someday.

Fine looking rifle.

My 700 Rem-Age with 18" Criterion 6.5 Creedmoor barrel gets 2662fps from Hornady 314xxxx lots of 140 Amax Match ammo, 2640fps from a 140gr HPBT over 42.5gr H4350, and 2810fps from a 123 Amax over 40.7gr Varget...all per Magnetospeed V2.

You're going to love it. Not just the weather resistant aspect but the handling all the way around. The velocity loss will be negligible with plenty of power for hunting and there isn't a creature walking the woods that's going to want to be in the sights.
You may even like it so much that you start shortening other rifles. Stocks, barrels, ultralight scopes... There's a whole other world to explore :)
Nice rig

Fantastic!!
Enjoy it, you will love the Creedmoor. From Pressure Tracing and Chrono work, you won't give up much speed, similar to the 308.

Thanks!

Just ordered the dies and a couple of boxes of bullets to start with. 107 grain Sierra Matchkings and 90 grain Speer TNT's.

90gr Speers a man after my own heart, 95 Vmax's are also devastating.

You are going to really like the shorter barreled creed. I have one that is 17" long and is a magnum sporter contour. I am shooting the 120 NBT for hunting. Have taken 4 deer with it between last year and this year. Two of them fell were shot and the others went 10yds and 30yds.

Accurate enough to shoot golf balls at 100yds reliably.

What kind of barrel did you start with before you sent it to Jim?

Nice build, I like the shorty build look. What was your approximate overall weight (minus optics)?

Thanks and no clue on the weight. Ill weigh it tonight and check. I carved out some range time today between appointments to test the first handloads today!

Scott- I just tried weighing it and I guess our bathroom scale doesn't go below 10lbs. And that is with the scope and bipod on it. Sorry couldnt be more help.
