Introduction
So I'm in the process of building 2 extreme long range target rifles, one for myself and one for my dad. I recently moved to SC where I have access to steel out to 1,500+ yards in 200 yard intervals, and really started to get into precision shooting since then. I just wanted to start a thread where I can consolidate any and all pictures, progress, and information, as well as a sort of documentation for how the rifles are being built.

Background
Obviously, the following is an extremely brief account of the last year and a half or so, but offers a brief storyline of where I started and how I got to where I am. Around this time last year, I purchased my first bolt action rifle. I've never been hunting, so there was never really much point in having one. I came across (what I thought) was a pretty good deal on a Winchester Model 70, chambered in 7mm rem mag. It was bare bones; synthetic stock, sporter barrel, and a cheapy 3-9 scope on it. I put a Caldwell bipod on it because i thought it was cool, and left it at that:

Rifle #1

Around the same time, I was in the process of moving to SC for work. I had taken a liking to precision target shooting (more so than clays and handguns), and decided that it was time to invest a little more into some more serious equipment. After much research and deliberation, I traded the Model 70 in at the local Cabela's (even made a few bucks on it) and settled on a Savage 110 FCP HS Precision chambered in .300 win mag and a Vortex Viper 6-24x50 PST scope. I've always had a love for "tacticool" rifles and big magnum cartridges, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. I decided that this was a good place to start and would serve me well for what I was looking to do:

Rifle #2

Not long after that, the mod bug started to bite. I loved the rifle and scope setup, but I still wanted more. I had the muzzle threaded and installed a brake to help with recoil reduction. I also sent the stock out to CA to have a KMW Loggerhead adjustable cheek piece installed:

http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h475/Garrett_Nesbitt/DSC_1449_zpsiwhdmlrv.jpg (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/Garrett_Nesbitt/media/DSC_1449_zpsiwhdmlrv.jpg.html)
http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h475/Garrett_Nesbitt/DSC_1454_zpsubdgdpiu.jpg (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/Garrett_Nesbitt/media/DSC_1454_zpsubdgdpiu.jpg.html)

It was around that time that I found SCOTG and got a membership, giving me access to steel silhouettes out to 1500 yards. This was my first time shooting anything other than paper, and my first hit at 400 yards had me hooked. Up until that point, I had been shooting strictly factory ammo, and I decided that if I were to get serious about this long range precision thing, that I would have to start reloading my own. I went out and bought an RCBS rock chucker kit and started teaching myself the basics of reloading.

Basically, with the help of the internet (the major DO's and DO NOT's), some trial and error, and help from a good friend that I met at the range, my hard work finally started to pay off:

http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h475/Garrett_Nesbitt/3.7SuperX_zpsb0usmqrv.jpg (http://s1111.photobucket.com/user/Garrett_Nesbitt/media/3.7SuperX_zpsb0usmqrv.jpg.html)

Once I had a firm grasp on loading, I decided that I wanted to up my game even more, and decided that I was ready to step into the realm of the .338 Lapua Mag and super high end optics. I sold off the .300 win, my dies, and all the brass that I had for it and purchased the same rifle chambered in .338 Lapua. I won't post any more pictures up because it looked the same as the .300 FCP HSP, but with a big ass DBM. TACTICOOL!!

Rifle #3

I also sold off the Viper and bought a new Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27x56 EBR-2C in mil/mil. I knew that if I was going to be serious about long range shooting, having the equipment to do it would be that much easier. I justified this purchase with a promise to myself that I'd do my homework the same way I did with reloading, and become proficient with LR shooting (reading dope charts, dialing elevation & wind, trajectory validation, etc.). Don't have any pictures, of the scope, but will post some when I get home, that thing is a BEAST.

I shot that for a few months, heading to the SCDNR range and SCOTG just about every week. And thanks to my newfound proficiency with reloading, I was able to shoot about 50 rounds per range session without eating me out of house and home. However, being able to shoot a high powered cartridge such as the Lapua that often does not bode well for barrel life. I began to see accuracy suffer, and decided that it was time for a re-barrel and new chassis, which brings us to this point.

I will update the thread with build sheets for both rifles and progress as I go.

so are you building 2 rifles or rebarreling the 338 and putting it in a chassis? as far as barrel life you just have to look at barrels as consumables(and order 2 at a time)especially with mag cals...thats one of the reasons i sold off all of my 300 win mag stuff and went with a 6.5mm...at about 12-1400 rounds my win mag would start to open up and at 16-1800 the barrels were done...i love the 300wm and did keep the mag bolt head...i need to stay outta your thread or youll have me building another one LOL!!

Building 2 separate rifles, will update the build sheets when I get a minute.

The .300 win mag is for my dad and I'm rebarreling the .338 for myself. I know that you're "supposed to order 2 barrels at once" but I don't really follow that. I was surprised at the life on my win mag actually, I had 2000 rounds through that thing and it was still shooting bug holes when I sold it. The Lapua, not so much. Accuracy definitely started to suffer with my first barrel after about 1,500 rounds. I found another factory barrel second hand that I installed and accuracy went back to it's normal self, but then I decided to go with a Pac-Nor barrel to see if I was getting better velocity out of a longer tube. Still waiting on that to come in, but I have everything else.

Gotta grab some more pictures of the scope, chassis, and some of the other parts that will be going into these things!

It's been a while and I don't have my load book with me, but I think I settled on 69.5gr RL-22, CCI 215s, and 210gr VLDs. Was averaging just under 2,800 fps with that charge but the ES was under 10. Definitely wasn't a hot load by any means but it gave me great accuracy and the barrel was still shooting perfectly when I sold it.

Needless to say, I can get RL-22 and the 210 VLDs at the local Cabela's, so that's where I'm going to start with load development on my dad's rifle.

go with the atlas youll love that bipod...takes a minute to get use to but when you do its a big step above the harris...also might try the RL-25 in your dads rig...great powder in big cases....and small ones too.

Yeah I already have the rail attachment for my handguard too. I don't want to sell the Harris though as I'll always be able to use it on something, just gotta get some funds together for the Atlas. I have tried RL-25 with great results, both in the .300 and the .338 actually. It's a little bit harder to come by than RL-22 is though, and I've had good luck with both powders. Might see if I can order some as I've stayed strictly with RL-33 for the Lapua since then.

Quick update on the .300 win mag. Got the receiver yesterday (thanks Rosco!). Things are starting to come together nicely. Still waiting on the barrel nut and recoil lug to come in. Will be prepping and glass bedding the stock this weekend, free floating the barrel, etc. I still need to get a trigger (Stevens will do for now), muzzle brake blasted/coated, a limbsaver pad, scope base & rings, and a scope. Hoping to have this one up and running by March (ideal shooting weather here in SC), but it should be done well before then.

On the Pac-Nor did you go with polygonal rifling or? Am considering a barrel from them either 6 groove or polygonal.

I just went with the standard 5R rifling. I considered the polygonal or 6 groove but ultimately ended up with the standard 5 groove for simplicity's sake. I've had good luck with the 285 and 300 grain bullets in the factory 1:10 barrel, so I figured I'd stay with what I knew worked.

For those with staggered feed actions and DBM conversions - am I able to mill the bottom of the receiver to accept longer COAL if I won't be using the blind mag box? There's a little lip at the bottom of the magwell that looks like it's used to mate up with the blind mag box, and it's preventing me from being able to load to mag length. I believe that I should able to mill some material off to prevent longer cartridges from getting caught.

Pics for reference:

I would be interested to see photos of the ramp trimmed as well, I have two actions that need this mod. I know Jeff at CDI Precision said it can been done pretty easily.

It doesn't even look like the ramp needs to be trimmed much, if at all. It's primarily the lip just below the ramp that's in the way and preventing longer rounds from feeding. It seems that the only thing the lip is there for is so that the blind mag box has something to clip into, so I don't think it would take much modification at all. I may put a call into CDI tomorrow, otherwise I'm just going to throw it on the mill and see what we can do with it.
