shooting savage model 10 hs precision 308

loaded up 168gr HPBT hornadys 44gr of Imr 4064, i have tried 2.775 2,800 2.815 coal, all sized and trimmed to spec lake city brass

4 out of 5 bullets make a half inch group to maybe 3/4 depending on the coal i tested, but EVERY group had one flyer that made the group 1"

this happened out of 5, 5 round test shots, it even did it with my 43.5gr loads at this point im at a loss wondering what i should try?

Try having someone else you know is a good trigger man shoot a group.

ill have to try that, im re sizing and trimming them all to same size and going to test again.. with it happening with almost every group has me puzzled, my reloads in my 223 im shooting quarter sized groups with 53gr and 68gr bullets.. i would like to say its me pulling but i dont think it is after as many groups as i have tried
i went through and re torqued the action screws earlier today and will try again next weekend

When it gets down to the natts ass and I need to get possible human error out of the equation, I'll vise my rig down with a holding fixture. Be as it may,all the years I've been sending rounds down range, you know when you pull it.

Is it the same round in the group or is it random?

I had the same problem in my 11vt in .223. A thorough barrel cleaning took care of the problem. Had some copper fouling.

Seems to be random..

And bs as far as cleaning I cleaned the gun before we shot and used 5 sighters to foul barrel a little I bet I ran 10 patches threw it was a very throrough cleaning with 3 patches, brass brush 3 patches and brass brush and then three more patches
it was clean when I was done

ganna try lead sled next go around these other shots where off bags it was a little windy but not much
hopfilly can eliminate the problem

I get the exact same problem with my 10T in 308. It's random bullets as well. It's with my 178gr HPBT tho.

How do you know that you don't have one good shot and 4 flyers?

Realize this may sound funny but it may be too clean. Shoot it dirty and see. A little fouling doesn't usually seem to hurt, at least for me.
Second, I would consider shortening it up a hair at a time. Maybe quarter turns on the seating die. Seems to work for me with flyers.Find the best depth on the four shot then shorten a quarter turn. Just write down where you started so if it doesnt work you can reset.

How long between each shot? As a barrel warms especially sporters they will walk a bit throwing the group and you start pulling your hair out.

Have you chronographed each shot to see if the MV was in the same ball-park range... Clues like that can give lots of hints as to what is going on.

Reloading is just one aspect of accurate shooting, gathering LOTS of data (MV, Temperature, humidity, wind direction/speed ...) for each shot and shooting session is important!

It might be your scope has a loose reticle. I had this problem with a Leupold 6.5X20. (about 30 years old) Leupold fixed it no questions asked

Yea buddy.

As the barrel warms, be conscious of how long each round sits in the chamber. Try different primers and be aware of neck tension on each round you load. If one goes in easier or harder than the other 4 that may be your problem.

Might not be a load problem. Could be something to do with how you shoot, off bench with rest, or off bipod sitting or prone.

Dry fire between each round. Do everything just as if you were going to fire a live round. I have had the random fliers in every group, it was worse with my 308 than my 22-250 I was flinching. Or if you have a rim fire shoot a group with it then shoot a group with your centerfire.

ok i got some more loaded

i ran my 44gr load over a crono last time with the 168gr bullets and seems to be shooting tooo fast like 2800-2850
ive loaded up another set from 41 to 43 in .5 increments to run over the chrono and test load
weird part at 44gr showed zero signs of over pressure but didnt have a chrono first time i tested

so if we ever get a day without rain im going to test i have alot of loads to shoot from my 17 hornet 223 and 308

Are you measuring coal or to the ogive? This could be part of the inconsistency also.

No just the coal
i don't have the parts to measure ogive yet it's on my list next time I make a order

the last loads where shooting a little to hot.. I have more to test if it quits raining

I haven't shot 168's in so long I think the 2650-2750 was the sweet spot
