Well about a month about I picked up a south bend model 9A lathe and had no idea how to use it. Bought a few books and watched some YouTube and have successfully chambered my first barrel, threaded, and timed my brake. Picked up a 338 edge reamer and bought a 338 blank. Ended up being about 21" barrel. The max I can chamber is about a 23-24". I know the barrel is short for the caliber but this was an experiment and big learning curve. I am pretty happy with it so far. Haven't gotten to shoot it yet. The 1200 yard range that I have been shooting my 308 and 300 win mag don't allow the 338's due to tearing up the steel targets. I have found another place that is a bit farther that I will try eventually. Im thinking I will pick up a 308 reamer next as that is something that my friends and I all use. Her are the pics of it.

I think you have an extra pic in there that doesn't belong. But all the pics look great ;) ;)

Yeah I uploaded it from my phone using tapatalk and imageshack. That pic was not on my phone, not sure what happened. It has been removed. It was not done intentionally.

Lol that's what they all say.....
I was alerted of the image but by the time I found it you were all good.
It's not the first time imageshack has done that.

I'm dead serious. Was not trying to start anything. Just wanted to share my build.

Looks very BA! Especially like the way your brake turned out!

Well thank you. The barrel has a very slight taper to 1" to be flush with the brake. I think profiling the barrel is the worst part. It's very time consuming and keeping the barrel from chattering is challenging. Have to use the steady rest and do half the barrel then the other half.

I was just giving you a hard time about the odd pic. I figured it was a mistake. Too bad though, appeared to be an attractive looking young lady ;) . Your build looks great and machine work looks great, especially for a first time. I am curious to see what kind of speeds you get with that shorter barrel.

Haha yeah I had to take a good look at the pic and see what it was. Unfortunately it was nothing I was familiar with, lol. Thanks for the kind words on the barrel. I have read different things about short barrels with the 338 Lapua only loosing 20-30 fps per inch. I'm hoping to push the 285gr to 2500-2600fps with 93gr or so of h1000

Great looking work!
Please DO give us an update when you get some rounds down it. I run the edge in 24"-26" and don't loose much of anything compared to typical 30" reported speeds.
I also have some similar length barrels I considered chambering in edge to test so really would love to hear how she does.
I'ld be willing to bet she exceeds your expectations.

What are you using for a load? I have some hornady 285 with 93gr h1000 loaded up. It would be cool not to loose as much as I am thinking I will.

Nice job! Question... Are Twix bars an integral part of the process?

Haha no. I keep some drill bits and such in the metal tin. Works pretty good.

I run mild loads of H1000 at 89.0 grains (brass lasts forever= 8x.....+) getting 2781 from a 24" with 300 SMKs in #1.
Getting 2810 in 24" with 300 OTMs from #2 and 2840 from 26" #3 using 300 OTMs.
Had #1 (24") over 2850 with 91 grains but brass only lasted a few firings.

Finally got out yesterday to shot this. 21"ish barrel was about 2650fps with a 285 hornady and 93 grains of h1000 and no signs of over pressure. My Boyd's stock needs to have pillars installed and bedded as the wood compressed and action bolts were loose after about 10 rds. Grouping opened a lot after this but first 5 shot group was 1.2 moa. Hope to get under 1 moa after I work on the stock. Pretty happy with it so far though.
