vertical string groups

Savage 16 is stringing vertically.
The stock and scope have been swapped out, same problem. Stock from Savage synthetic to Savage wood
working scope removed from another rifle that did group.
I use a wheeler fat wrench to install scope hardware.
any suggestions?

What contour barrel? What clambering? Could be.the.barrel getting hotter and can also be a sign of breathing while shooting.

I typically don't breathe during shots
Those shells casings come out cold. The end of and 8 shot string, might warm the barrel up

I shoot a factory 270 accutrigger just fine.
This short action accutrigger re-model is challenging me.

How are you shooting? Ie...bag, bipod? Could be poor ignition or neck tension. could be flimsy stock.

the group on the right looks like your right at the edge of a node...id try going up in charge weight(if your not near max and if near max down) .2g X 3 rounds if the group dont tighten or open up adjust your seating depth both ways 0.005 and shoot the same load...if your near max load and already close to the lands try seating 0.005 farther away.

Check to make sure your action screws are tight. If it's an accustock, tighten the screws in the proper order. Make sure the rear tang is free floated. Then follow LongRange's suggestion, I think he hit the nail on the head.

Properly torque the action screws. That is my best suggestion based upon experience.

Also, be sure your barrel is truly free floated. If you can slide a business card back to the action, your good to go. If not, you'll need to open up the barrel channel some with sand paper and a wood dowel. If it's a brand new rifle, you may want to check for copper build up too.

If you are shooting off of rest, or bags, sling studs can catch on bag & cause vertical. I remove studs for bench shooting.

first configuration on the right is the factory synthetic stock
second configuration on left is wood stock
neither are accustocks
shooting "bag" - eliminates being on stud, since it would really be noticeable

I will re-check barrel float
what would be the proper torque sequence of screws for wood stock?
the 6.8 is really a cold round for this barrel
I will get the copper cleaner out as well

Had it happen to me with a blackpowder rifle. The scope was slipping in the rings and (I cant remember which direction the bullets went...) the bullets started going either up or down. I noticed it and remounted the scope according to my eye relief preference, and then put a dab of blue gun lock-tite under the top of each ring. The sliding stopped and has been fine ever since.

silver box Leopold rings look like crap. pictures later, but they only were holding on about 3/16 at the edge on both sides, which allowed the up and down to vertical string.
I just thought cheap finish, but cheap Leopold rings are just cheap. I will go get some better rings and lap these some more to have as a backup set

Scope slide or a wobbly scope? I will have to get that kit. I have read about it. Glad you found your problem. Thanks for letting us know.

Hi there folks . I am new to this forum , but I figured I had to reply to this problem . I had the same problem with my Savage after sighting it in the first time. I cleaned the tube time after time thru a couple boxes of factory ammo and still had a wide spread of about one m.o.a. This doesn't sound like much , but we are talking about varmint size barrel . Although I still have the barrel , and love shooting it , I never got to the sweet spot. BUT I purchased a 22-250 Ackley Improved barrel ! After break in procedure , I was knocking down .300 groups ! I ,of course , have to reload for this barrel . I also reload for the others. As far as powder.... might want to try Varget.
So far I have enjoyed reading on the forum , and will probably just WATCH for now , so everyone enjoy .

no noticeable wobble to the scope
The first pick shows the rings only had contact at the edge. the second pic after some more lapping still has a majority of the contact at the edge and the final pic is where I feel comfortable to be able to use the rings.
These were the Leopold Rifleman silver card rings, $20, and worth about $10. over a box of ammo and a couple trips to the range. I will never buy the Rifleman Leopold products again. Cheap is cheap.
The gold carded Leopold rings appear to have a much better surface contact area and I did not lap them to where the finish was removed. Very happy with the $60 rings
This is not the problem resolution, but the most logical troubleshooting effort that will yield results. It will be the end of the week before I can get out to confirm
