Zastava announced that they were starting to make their left handed Mausers again but I don't think they'll have the left handed 458's available before then.

Besides that I don't need to compensate with a larger cartridge when I shoot so well. ;D

Just get a 458 winmag barrel and screw it on.
I just got one from Sinman.

You should be able to get close to 2150 fps with a 24" barrel and a 500 gr barnes banded solid over RL15.
That works out to about 5000 fpe.

Mount a Leupold 1-4X shotgun scope on a steel base and rings and run about 50 rounds through it for a shake down
and good to go.

If that's not enough and you happen to have one of the RUM actions, ream it out to
458 lott, or just hang the bullet out to Lott load length of 3.6" and have basically the same
Ballistics. My 458 WM barrel has the longest freebore of any barrel I have ever owned.

With a Lott you can get 2250 or maybe 2300 and more recoil. That works out to about
5500 FPE.

A duromax stock goes a long ways to help with recoil and or Magnaport and or a couple of mercury
recoil reducers in the butt.

Thanks, I'll take my 375 H&H next year but I'm probably going to rebarrel a Ruger M77 (7 Mag) to either 458 WM or 416 Ruger for a large bore gun for later trips.

A standard Ruger 77 action can accomodate a 470 Short Capstick.

I will second the fact of bringing enough gun for the Cape Buffalo hunt! I have a .470-Capstick in a model 70 Winchester but we went to a bit more chamber and it holds longer cases, which in turn hold more powder and give more velocity. A 500 grain bullet at 2475-fps out of a 25 inch barrel, it will be cut down later to 23 inches total.

I got to shoot a .45caliber Socom yester, very nice weapon in the bush, wish they would have been around for the guys in Viet Nam days. I haven't seen any .50cal bull pups yet but have seen a couple of smaller calibers. The SCAR is impressive but expensive too!

Not much the old and boreing 30-06 cannot handle under 400 yards with a 165 gr bullet.

A 308 with the same bullet is better than a 270 short mag IMO I would not be afraid to pack a 7lb 22 inch 30-06 on anything walking in North America.

Now getting jumped by a grizzly and taking bad shots, not much will kill that bear aiming 30 inches on each side of the vitals except a bazooka or a grenade.

The way that most of those shooters mount that rifle it's almost as if
they're expecting the recoil of a 22 rim fire.

I would venture to say, since the .460 Wby deals out 105 pounds of felt recoil to the shooter, that this shoulder cannon will most likely dish out close to 200 pounds of recoil to the shoulder when loaded to Max. I know it has over 10,000 pounds of kinetic energy and that is more than I care to shoot.

On one trip to the Okavango Delta, I took four rifles (yes, know only three rifles are allowed but two looked liked shotguns to the gov't inspectors).

Light................... 460 Weatherby
Medium............... 470 Nitro Express
Medium Heavy..... 500 Nitro Express
Heavy................ 585 Nyati

Used 500-grain Swift A-frame bonded-core partition bullets in the 460 Wby.

Took most of the plains game with the 460.

It worked fine. No second shots needed. The red lechwe and warthogs fell pretty quick.


Used the heavier guns with solids on Cape Buffalo.
