How does yours shoot ? What range have you fired at so far? Do you have a favorite load your willing to share. I used to live in oregon and it was hard to find a place where we could shoot over 3 or 4 hundred yards to many mountains. What kind of accuracy are you getting out at 300 yards?

The recoil pad is glued on makes it impossible to adjust for proper eye relief or length of pull. You have to use the scope base to get proper eye relief, then your scope is to far forward. Would it kill hs precision to use two screws to mount recoil pad? :help::help::frusty::help:

I'm still trying to decide on load but Hornady 285gr bullets in Lapua brass, federal gold medal match magnum primers @ 3.704"AOL with 93gr Retumbo/2840fps or 94gr/2870 are shooting in the .2's @ 100yds. furthest I've shot to date is 936 yds down at Ft. Lewis on silhouettes.

One other thing I noticed is when mounting the scope base the 3 screws to the rear thread in farther than the forward most screw. The front screw only threads in about half way. The scope base looks like it was designed for this. I believe the barrel is the reason they did this. Has any one had issues with the scope base becoming loose or getting damaged threads. Hope I explained this so people understand what I mean.

What scope are you using ? Can you actually zero in using scope or do you have to hold over or under at 100 yards. I was told that my 40 moa scope base would make it hard to use scope cross hairs under 300 yards.

Very nice! I've been looking at getting a 110 in 338LM myself. Living in FL now, but will be moving out into the midwest soon/within the next 18mo.
Keep us updated on how it performs!
How do you feel about the rifle system as it comes from the factory? Like how solidly it's built and how rigid it is and that kind of stuff?
Don't get me wrong I'm a huge Savage fan but it's a factory offering, not a custom-built rifle, and I'm wondering how it stacks up.

btw, about the recoil pad.... nothing stopping you from just removing it the old fashioned way and installing your own 2 screws ;-)

If I remove the glued on recoil pad how do I know whats under it ? Will it have a place I can insert screws or is it hollow ? I cant find anyone who knows what is under it.

Feels solid. This is my 2nd savage rifle my first was my model 10fp tactical and the cheap plastic stock that came with it was a disgrace. I never could figure out why they sold their rifle with a crappy stock. So when I got the 338 with the hs stock I was alot happier with savage. I have already voiced my feelings about the recoil pad being glued on the stock??? I had a few more issues with the rifle out of the box. 1 the muzzle brake was about 45 degrees crooked on the barrel right out of the box. I fixed that myself with a wrench. I called savage and they said it was unusal to hear that issue and said they would track it back to the tech who did the work on it. 2nd issue is the forward most scope base screw not seating as far down as the rearward three. The customer service person said they must have not removed the gunk from the hole enough so the screw could seat farther down . After further inspection I figured out its made that way and the scope base is designed that way also. Customer service was more than willing to have me ship it back so they could address the issues. With a 6 to 8 week turn around time once they recieved it back. The muzzle break was fixed by me with twist of a wrench. And the scope base screw issue was not a mistake on there behalf but incorrect information from customer service person. Besides that im happy with the gun and cant wait to shoot it. My 10fp in 308 is only good out to 600 yards with moderate wind on a 16 inch steel target. 700 yards on a body target with light to no wind. Im hoping the 338 can produce the same results at its effective range of 1500 yards and body targets at 1800 that would make me very happy.

I shoot a lil ol' Savage Axis and make good hits on a 16" target well out past 8-900 yds, and have made hits, albeit not quite as consistently, at 1k. I'm sure your 308 is capable of the same. Awesome looking rig, though. Can't wait to build a 338 myself.

Update took thursday and friday off work. Reloaded thursday day packed up the jeep and went out to my spot. The weatherbug forcasted 0 to 2mph winds for friday and saturday so I took advantage of it and spent two days getting my dopes logged in my book. Started at 700 yards and worked my way out to 1300 yards logging my dopes every 50 yards. Went thru 175 rounds over two days of shooting. All I shoot at is a steel body target 18" wide by 30" tall. After getting it sighted in at each range, I had no problem getting repeat hits on the target. At 1300 yards I was able to put 4 out of 5 bullets on the target on my last string. The wind was almost non existant most of the time. The dust would stay in the air and slowly glid away. My best friend / spotter who I owe a steak dinner and two bottles of bullet bourbon, was a big help, letting me know where the hell the misses hit and driving down range moving the target and spray painting over the hits so I had a fresh target. Have to say my neck is sore and my shoulder is slightly bruised. I think Im going to get a better muzzle brake for this rifle. I am very satisfied with this gun and my set up. Thank God for two days of great wind conditions. And spotters who only ask for bourbon and steak in return. I have always loved my model 10fp .308 but Im freakin hooked on the 338.

My 308 is almost at 2500rounds down range on its second stock barrel and coming up on 14 or 15 years of service. I have made hits at 800 on the body target but throw in wind that goes on and off and either I cant adjust for it or the barrels accuracy is just not there. I am getting ready to swap out the barrel next year and upgrade my scope also its as old as the rifle. Or I might just sell it. The 338 reloading components are very costly not sure I can afford to dump money on both. Im not sure what a savage axis is but im going to google that model tomorrow morning. Thats good range for a stock rifle. Do you have any pics posted up or pm me a pic.
