We're looking at increasing our inventory of pre-fits to enable a shorter lead time for your new barrel. What we're planning on doing also is carrying some contoured & threaded blanks in various calibers to shorten the lead time also. I realize after having done this for so many years that there is no "one size fits all". What we're planning on doing is pre-contouring blanks in various calibers and twist and lengths (26", 28" and 30" standard) and mainly in bull contours in different shank sizes. We realize that not everyone wants a bull contour, but with cnc equipment turning it from a bull contour to a varmint, magnum or sporter contour isn't that difficult. I also realize that 90% of the barrels that we sell are in what we refer to as a "Small Shank", so the majority will be in that configuration.

What I'm looking for is some input from everyone on the caliber & twist combinations that you'd like to see as well as cartridges.

I've also read on one of the posts concerning our marking of the barrels. Now that we're using a diamond based engraving bit instead of our computerized laser system, it does take a little longer. Here's what we're thinking. McGowen Precision Barrels - 260 Rem (8) (sample cartridge obviously). Would you prefer that Rem is spelled out? This will be all in one straight line. If you've seen our engraving before (with the manual engraver) it's not going to be that long, we'll obviously scale the font to keep it short.

Let me know, either through here or email me directly at info@mcgowenbarrel.com

Regards,
Dan

I have a large shank PTA and as you might guess, finding a pre-fit is tough. I complicate things by wanting Varmint contour barrels. I have a question.......if you turn a bull barrel does that introduce stress to the barrel?

More 6mm:
6x6.8
6mm spc
6x45 ( 6mmx.223)
Both 1/9" and 1/10" twists, 22 & 24" and heavy sporter/light varmint contours.
Im always checking this site, but wont buy a heavy 26" tube when I need lighter, smaller contours.
Would like to see threaded suppressor options as well in 5/8x24"

if you turn a bull barrel does that introduce stress to the barrel?

I believe a standard blank is larger than a "bull", so even bull barrels have been turned down. turning down in two steps (blank to bull, bull to varmint) should not cause any difference in stresses than if the barrel goes from blank to varmint in one step. that's the way I see it, but I'm not a barrel maker.

Sporter contour barrels, not everyone shoots targets. I would like to see either a 25-06 or 257 Weatherby with a 26" lighter weight barrel.

22BR and 6mmBr both in 1 in 14" twist

And in shorter lengths, like 22". Same for the sporter contour hunting barrels.

Second (or third) the 25s
25/06, 250 Savage AI, 257 Weatherby, 10 twist
Also agree on the above in Magnum or heavy sporter contours
6.5/06 would be sweet also in "hunting" contour, 8 twist
May not be enough general interest, but a 270 Weatherby in a 9.5 or 10 twist would be nice

Definitely 20-22" 223 and 308 varmint contour; wouldn't hurt to throw in a 260 as well. The tactical shooters would eat it up.

With others on 25s. There are always a lot of people wanting 25s, but no one has them.

Bike Effects,

The stress is very minimal. We're taking very shallow passes on the cuts, are flooding the heck out of the barrel with coolant. Also we incorporate an air clamping system on the barrel that keeps the barrel rigid during the lathe passes. Our feed and speeds are dialed in to reduce any stress caused by removing material.

+1 on the 25s. 250 savage and 257 roberts, both standard and improved. Sporter contours.

Thanks for asking. I would like to see more sporter (and thinner) for typical hunting cartridges.

Also a vote for #1 and #2 contours (or better yet, the absolutely perfect non-magnum Remington KS contour).
24"+ lengths.
Fast twist. The fastest available in any bore size.
6mm-284 but only if the throat is cut to put a 105 VLD on the lands at a COAL which functions through the magazine.
.240 Weatherby.
6x47 (.222 Rem Mag necked up)
.250-3000
.270 Weatherby
7x57 Mauser
8x57 Mauser
7x64 Brenneke

Thanks for asking for the input.

20" 1:7 223 Wylde, 20" 1:10 308, 20" 1:8 260 and 6.5 Creedmoor...all in varmint or light varmint contours.

Bonus points if threaded with protector, as McGowens through GunShack with similar specs are.

I prefer 1:7 to 1:8 for 223 because it gives a bit extra stability margin for the 80 Amax in cold/sea level temps, but 1:8 would be fine...need Wylde chamber for more freebore.
