Hey guys...have a lead on a Savage 99R...I own several 99's already but oddly enough I own no 99R's or RS's....this one is in 250 Sav, manufactured in 1950, wood is probably 90% and metal is 85% (I will try to post a pic)...it's missing the iron sights (front and rear...I think I have set off of a 99C that might fit it?)....any input on value? He want's $700 ...but I am thinking closer to $500? He's owned the gun for over 20 years and his wife last hunted with in 18 years ago when she moved to a bolt gun...bore is bright and clean, action is clean and tight...Any input?

Judging by the description I'd say $700 wasn't a bad price at all for a 250 R.

I'd jump on it if it was up here in Canada. You can't beat an R, best 99 Savage ever built.

I've got a safe full of R's and can't get enough of them, from 303 Savage to 358 Win to 308 Win to 300 Sav and my smith is holding a 250 for me right now. Just need to find the elusive 243 R to make it complete. I know theres one on GB but with a $3000 reserve the seller likes it a lot more than anyone else.

Hahahaha...Now that I've gone back and done some additional homework, I believe this is a 99EG, no? A lil help here Mad Dog?

I got one with the same checkering, and stock shape, but the ramp for the front sight in made onto the barrel, and I think it's a 1951 EG from what I've read on the computer.
I've been offered WAY more for mine than what I know it's worth, and the only reason I dont sell it is the sentimental value .
I would say that if yours aint been tapped for glass then somebody has had one of those one piece bases on it that attaches to the dovetail slot, and to the tang because yours has a bolt sticking up a little on the tang,..If I was you I would be looking for another one of those bases,Mine has been scoped (tapped) since my dad got it back in the late 50s or early 60s,and has taken a lot of game.I still kill an occasional deer or turkey with it ,I know that it's a no-no to tap them now days, but if it WASN'T scoped the gun would never have been enjoyed much by my late Father,or me..

Yeah this one has been tapped and at one point had an old Weaver scope on it but the previous owner forgot what he did with it. He had the rifle for over 20 years and his wife took a really nice 120 class buck 18 years ago with it...he claims it hasn't been shot sense and I believe him...the bore is clean and bright and rifling is nice and sharp/clean. The holes for where the factory sights were are at least properly plugged with threaded plugs that can easily be removed. I'll probably mount a 3-9x40 Nikon I have sitting in the box on it.

I have an older (war era 99 take down in 250-3000 as well as a late 60's 99 in 308...Ive owned the 308 for 25 years and hunted with it exclusively for almost 20 years)...I bought this one for my daughter to hunt with...I wanted a 250 Sav and was just about to buy a Savage Model 11 and rebarrel it to 250 Sav when I came across this rifle and opted to buy it instead...so it will get hunted with for awhile anyway.

That must have been common back then,My Dad was a big fixed power Weaver fan,and this was what was on the gun till his eyesite started getting bad.I thought about putting it back on,but common sense tells me to leave the varible on it,because my eyes aint great.http://i1295.photobucket.com/albums/b625/c433/250-3000/2deer_zps26c01544.jpg

I have a couple old Weavers just like that that were my grandfathers...also have a Lyman of the same era I think. The two Weavers are still nice and clear and one of them sits on a 1940's Browning 22 rifle we have.

Sorry been gone fishing all weekend, yep, it's a 99EG not an R.

$550 ain't bad, if you had paid $700 for an EG then you were getting close to the high end.

Fishing? And you didn't take me? I see the start of a possible beautiful relationship here...if only you had taken me fishing WITH you! hahahaha

The rifle is in pretty decent shape...would be better had someone not etched their drivers license # on it...hahaha But it is in great mechanical shape and will be a great rifle for my daughter to hunt with. I am happy with it.

I am going to need to put a shorter length of pull stock on it for her, do you know of any outlet for a stock so I can avoid cutting down the original stock? Also, any idea where I could locate the appropriate factory sights for it?

Thanks Mad Dog!

Pretty sure Boyds and Macon make stocks for them, good call on saving the original.

You wouldn't have wanted to be out fishing with me, 30 km winds, and 3 ft of ice. Only got 2 specks and had to throw one back cause it was the size of the minnow I got it on.

Thanks Mad Dog! When I am not hunting, I am fishing...I have a place up in Alaska on the Kenai I spend several weeks at annually... A bad day of fishing is still better than a great day at work!

Fishing may be problematic this summer. Lots of ugly politics going on here...

On the Kenai? I pay pretty close attention to it (I've had my place up there for 24 years now)...I haven't seen anything that will really impact me...I don't use guides, have private Kenai access and don't spend much time King fishing (mostly Reds, Silvers, Dolly's and Rainbows)...with is what has been the real battleground lately...that being said, what am I missing?

If you aren't king fisher, you're probably OK as we have had some good red runs. But the war is heating up between dip netters, king fishers, commercial fishers, guides, etc. I stay out of it, but it is getting grim and will eventually impact all users. At this point, you're probably not going to be bothered too much by the arguing if you just line for reds.

Yeah those battles have been heating up more and more the last few years....especially the battle of the Kings....we usually drift on drift-boat-Monday's when it's open, so it's not like we don't go after kings, it just isn't our priority. Any other day on the river than Mondays are painful to say the least when king season is open for retention. Thanka sayak!!

On the reloading side, my 250s like Reloader 15 right at max load. Have used it on several pick up loads of smallish Virginia whitetails (average dress weight 90lb) from 20 to 250 yards and finally decided Speer 100grs was the best on game bullet. Around here that EG 250 would fetch 700 to 800 easy, but people in the DC area have to much money.

Thanks Bigbuck! I plan to use either 100g Nosler Partitions or Ballistic tips (they have shot well in my older takedown 250-3000)...I have always had very good results with 100g bullets in quarterbores....I am hoping to get good results from IMR4895 or possibly IMR4064 (as I have 8 pounders of both)...I've never had good results from any of the Reloaders powders...dunno why as I know others do, probably just never found the right combo.

Yea I feel pretty good about the purchase the more I look around. Certainly can't complain!

Wait, people in DC buy guns? :the horror: ;)
