Barrels to keep in stock - list Em

I talked to Dennis over at the "in stock" mcGowen outlet barrel site, Ad above, and have been looking around at a lot of barrel makers in stock inventories lately and thought I would start a thread of what other barrels to keep in stock, IE you could buy and have it in your hands a week later so this is aimed at all the vendors.

My list here some are somewhat popular beyond the normal calibers.
9 twist 223 barrel are a dime a dozen, but you can never find a 7 twist.
Other good calibers are vaporware too.

I think first would have to be a 223 7 twist 26" small shank varmint barrel.
They are just vaporware, and I cant find one anywhere other than a custom.

3 below all available in 26" varmint 30" bull

To that add
308 10 twist shorty 18-20" maybe
308 10 twist long throat 30" bull for running the 208 amax long maybe.

338 Federal 10 twist light magnum contour probably 22" at least for me.
To me this is the perfect low recoil hog sledgehammer.
Savage should definitely add this caliber to the hog hunter rifle.

375 Ruger 12 twist 24" magnum contour.

Anything with slower twists, I know shooters that want rigs like mine, but don't want to wait 3-4 months for a barrel,

Yep it still amazes me with all this technology we have you still have to wait 3-4 months on a custom barrel.
Usually by that time I have changed my mind and moved on.

I'd like to see more light weight hunting barrels in stock. I'm getting tired of waiting 6-10 months for custom barrels. But unless you want a varmint contour, small bore caliber that's what you have to do.

tammons, thanks for starting the post.

I am reading all responses very closely. You will see additions to our inventory shortly.

We are going to do our best to accomadate everyone.

We have been open since 1pm last Friday and already experiencing growing pains. It's keeping me on my toes, but we have a committed crew.

We are all active shooters and have been listening to everyone since last summer! This is when we decided we were going to make a difference to the rifle industry. Plus I personally love the products we produce.

About three years ago, McGowen had to talk me into using their barrels. I was very impressed with the performance of the barrels and did very well in shooting events. Now, all of my rifles are equiped with McGowen's. It feels great being involved in this dream with a product you believe in. I recruited several people and formed the "McGowen Pro Team" last year, all who will agree with me, our products perform well.

We didn't need to expand our business. We already were one of the largest barrel producers in the world before this project started. Our barrels are sold in several countries.

We decided to start the Outlet and take care of our own fellow shooters, like you!

Different regions of the country have their favorites. Barrels that are popular here may not be popular in your area. But were going to have products for everyone.

Again, the entire McGowen crew thanks everyone, and I will keep you updated.

I may have a little insight on this subject, you can have your basic inventory with common stuff that sells or you could try and have everything for everyone and have barrels sitting on the shelf for months maybe years. Having inventory ties up capital and usually a business will try to make up that capital in the items that are selling well. So you can go with a a few popular sellers and keep the prices low or try to keep everything and have barrels sitting around and maybe have to offset the price. I would think that Mcgowen themselves should be able to look at their sales records and be able to tell what have been selling the most of and keep those on hand. I myself don't have the capital to keep $40k worth of barrels in stock and right now I like to cater to special barrels that people want.

I will add, my favorite barrel length for a hunter is around 20" but I am in the east.

You lose some velocity but not a big deal for a hunting rifle and with powders like RL17 you can sometimes make up for some of that lost velocity.

IE I have a 21" bbl 270 that I run the 95 gr TTSX over RL17 at about 3680 FPS and the 130 gr GK at over 3000 with RL17.

I prefer shorter barrels for normal hunting mostly due to bush whacking, and we ride around a lot and I usually have a rifle in the front of the truck. Also better in a 4x4 box stand if you hunt out of those. I hunted with a 26" bbl Savage in a choate stock one year in box stands and it was the most cumbersome rig to manipulate I have ever used. Most handy was a 16" barreled AR15.

I have pretty much shot everything under the sun up to a 458 winmag and those above work for me.
375 ruger is an overkill for now, but AK is in the future if my knees hold out.
If I lived out west a 7mm magnum or 300 winmag would probably be on the list.

Me being a coues hunter and from Arizona I need a rifle that gives me match grade accuracy to reach out and touch a small deer like we have here but also have it not weigh a ton so I can pack it up those steep canyons and mountains. I also need the length to be there so I can get all the horespower I can out of it, as most shots on average are 500+ yards. I would think that there has got to be a pretty good market for hunter weight barrels at least in the standard cartridges. Thanks Dennis for trying to do what you are doing, I think it is a great idea and wish you the best of luck with your business venture.

Large shank options that are Varmit contours.

Not everyone wants a 1inch muzzle.

Lots of LRP owners are looking for a slightly lighter contour, or will be getting the itch to swap barrels soon!

Plenty of custom varmint and bull barrels and calibers stocked by most vendors. Savage sporter barrels are a "dime a dozen". I would love to see a 22" LW (2 lb -2.5 lb) custom sporter barrel offered in a contour similar to that used on the Savage 14 Light Weight Hunter. I could cut and recrown to shorter length if desired. Stocked calibers would include 223, 243, 260, 7mm08, 308, 25-06, 270, 280, 30-06. With today's powders and premium bullets a shorter, lighter sporter barrel for hunting rifles is the nitch that needs to be filled with in-stock custom barrels IMO. If a McGowen custom LW sporter barrel could deliver cold, 3-shot accuracy similar to my current McGowen 26" varmint barrels, I would switch out several Savage factory sporter barrels that copper foul like crasy.

+4; need more timely options for the varmint/predator hunter. Longer twists, shorter barrels (22 - inch) and light varmint contours are my preference.

Varmints/Predator shooting is exactly the reason for my suggestion to start. Or maybe offer semi customs in 20/22 caliber not just 6mm on up.
