My son and I have been practicing for a while for an F/TR match. Sunday was his 1st match. This was his first rifle match ever, however he does shoot a lot and is a very, very good shot. So I at least thought it would not be a horrible experience. He was shooting a Savage 10BA, using 175 SMK.

We had been out to 800 yards before shooting steel but never gone this distance, he got off to a rough start. We had shot in a 15 MPH wind last time out and I don't think I came back to zero on the windage. So we wasted some ammo. After finally getting sighted in, he was shooting pretty consistent 8's, three 9's in a row, some 10's and some 6's and 7's when the wind picked up. Finally, got an X on his 2nd to last shot. The wind picked up towards the end and he did all his own windage and elevation corrections himself on the target. His best relay was 162-1X which I thought was pretty darn good for a 14 year old, 1st time at 1,000 yards! I was proud! :smile-new:

Not bad at all with a (relatively) short-barreled stick, etc. I've seen people do far, far worse.

Glad to see you have 'em doping his own wind... some ranges are rougher than others, but I'd rather see the new/young shooters have to work for it a little from the start rather than just get lucky with a 'bunny' range and then get discouraged the first time things get tough.

Tell him to keep at it, and don't worry about what other people are shooting, scores or gear. Concentrate on doing a little better each time up at the line, and figuring out what went right (and what didn't) and soon enough the scores will start taking care of themselves ;)

Congrats to him on the score. If he continues he will be a force to be reckoned with as unlike us old folks he can correct any problems before they become habit. Keep up the good work Collin.

One thing is for sure, I will never go shooting with you and your son, I already have low self esteem, and that's all I need a 14 year old owning me at the range. LOL

My son is doing this again this weekend, for his 2nd time. This time we are already zeroed for 1,000. He said he's going to shoot 160 or better in every relay. He is very excited (or maybe it's me). Will post the results.

I have a young lady who shot my match this weekend. She will send a grown man home crying.:(
She is 14 years old also. I'm going to put her on a 1000 next month See how she does.
She is a cute young lady also. Her dad is a gun builder, she is setup well.We have extremely high and constantly changing winds here at Pascagoula. Every flag goes in it own direction (normal). This people, is a skilled shooter...a future Champion.
I'll try to get some pics of next time, they consider here their home range. JC, ya missed the fun, hope the floor got done.
We have been shooting 45 for score, due to problems finding components.
