224 TTH

Hello:

I'm considering building a 224 TTH on a Savage short action, Accutrigger with a detachable magazine. Hornady lists the maximum overall cartridge length with their 75 & 80gr. A-Max bullets at 2.870". What is the maximum overall cartridge length that this action will accomodate with a detachable magazine. I want to build a sporter rifle for hunting coyotes, javalina, and deer. I would appreciate anyone who has built a rifle in this caliber offering their input, especially if the longer 110 action size is required. Thank you.

I've got one but mine's on a long action....8 twist heavy sporter barrel.

My current test loads are 75g A-max loaded .005" from the lands. At that length they are 2.930" from base to tip of the bullet. They do fit in a short action mag (with a little room to spare)......I put one in my model 10 predator mag to check for ya. I have no idea if they'll feed reliably though.

The whole thing is iffy and the throat on a barrel will be the deciding factor.

I'm in the exploratory stages of planning this build. I don't have an action, barrel, dies or brass, etc. I've been searching the web for as much as I can find on the cartridge and the experiences of others who have 224 TTH rifles. I'll certainly keep you updated on my progress.

I know it's not exactly the same cartridge, but I have a 22/243 built on a short action shooting 75gn A-Max's that feeds fine from the detachable mag.

I also have a 22/243 but mine is set up as a single shot on a long action, and I shoot 75gr amax over 4831sc. The long action is long enough to accomidate any bullet in the 243 case

Is yours the 22-243 Ackley, Middlestead or a standard 243 necked to 22 caliber? What kind of velocities are your getting with the 75 gr. A-max and what is the barrel length. Thank you.

mine is a standard 22-243 win. It is a Shilen barrel and they have a .250 neck, which is kinda a PITA. But it shoots pretty good. Right now I am waiting for some Devcon to get it shooting better. With a cool barrel it shoots bad but when it warms up it is a 1/4 moa gun, and I do believe that it is a bedding issure. I am running it between 3200 and 3300. I just got a new chrony because my other one was giving bad info and I havent shot the 22-243 through it yet because I have been working on a LR308 for a hog hunt.

There is a lot of load data out there for the 5.6 X 57 RWS cartridge which is much the same as the 224TTH> Hornady lists this cartridge in their reload book.

I shoot an improved version (ala Gibbs) of the above case in both a repeater and single shot. Both are short action and though I do not shoot an 80 grain bullet ( 60gr Partition) I think it should fit fine in both guns.

Thanks for the information. I read the cartridge description in the Hornady manual. It is so close to the 224 TTH that I would rather stay with the 6mm brass. I doubt many gunsmiths would have that chambering reamer. Brass and dies could be expensive.
Seems the 6mm version has a big following. I appreciate your input.

You should be able to get the 22/243 or 22TTH from shilen as a prefit pretty quick. All you need are some dies

I am currently using both Remington 6mm and RWS 7X57 rimless in the rimless version. To date I have not loaded warm enough to lose any Remington cases. I won't ever loose a primer pocket in the RWS cases.

I think the Shilen pre-fit Savage barrel is the way to go and a long action with the Accu-trigger and detachable magazine will complete the barreled action. Yes, the 22 Cheetah is another good one!

Had one close made up on a long action with a looong neck and no throat ( 30-06 case necked down and neck turned )with other dimensions the same as the 224 Clark. Pac Nor 1-8 barrel and shoots 75 and 80 gr bullets into a 1/2" and is great for kids on deer. It is amazing on how it puts them down. Don't believe you will be disappointed in the preformance.

I have heard from a hunter who had used the cartridge on deer and indicated he shot at a deer and wondered where it went after the shot. He said it dropped so fast that he lost sight of it. The Hornady 70gr. GMX got an outstanding review. Thanks for your input.

My buddy shot an antelope with his 22-6mm last year. He said cleaning it was simple....just open it up and pour out.

I built one on a SS LH SA this winter and have yet to build a load for it.

SNow finally melted enough so I could get to a close beach and shoot this morning.
52 grains of Rel 17 and both the 60 grain Nosler and the 62 Grain TSX were running at 3500 average FPS from a 16" barrel.
52 Grains H4831Sc gave 3350 with the 60 Grain Nosler and 3250 with the 62gr TSX

6MM Remington case on the left; 224 TTH improved with 30 degree shoulder next to it.
