Savage axis 2 stock compatibility between calibers?

Presently I have a stainless savage axis 2 in a nice pillar bedded Boyd’s At-One Thumbhole stock. It’s chambered in 223.Contemplating getting a 308 chambered rifle and was curious if this stock would work with an axis chambered in 308?

I would say yes. The .223 magazine has a block in the back for the shorter cartridge, but, I believe the mag is same length as the .308 mag. So...the stocks should be the same. To confirm you need someone with a .308/7mm-08/6.5CM to chime in with their bolt hole spacing.

Its my understanding that the Axis series only uses one action length. If thats the case then any Axis rifle in any cartridge should fit that stock just fine

I believe the difference only lies in the magazines essentially. I used to have a 30-06 axis and that would not work in the Boyd’s stock I have as the magazine didn’t fit. But the .308 is short action so I’m thinking the mag size may be the same just with the above mentioned spacers in the .223 mags.

I have a different .223 rifle now so feasibly could sell my .223 Axis (Probly won’t this things most accurate rifle I own). And being as a want a deer rifle eventually (looking to try hunting next year). I’m thinking I could reuse the nice stock I already invested in with a more appropriate for hunting caliber. At this point it’s more a thought exercise as I do also own an Axis 2 precision in 30-06. This obviously a good hunting caliber but man the rifle is HEAVY.

My third thought is to pickup a CZ 600 LUX in 30-06 as they are decently priced look great and would use ammo I already stock. But an axis is still the cheaper option and i have a lot of first hand experience with the platform.

Yeah, I have to say my screw spacing info was incorrect. I should have just mentioned the different magazine lengths between short and long cartridges, ie, .30-06 length and .308 length magazines.

PS just went to Boyd's site and they list two choices, short and long magazines. So it is safe to assume the .308 will fit your stock. Just have to find a magazine to fit :)

PPS when I put a .308 barrel on my Axis (originally a .223 with Pro Varmint stock) I never changed the magazine. I just single loaded the rounds.

Not quite the case BHJ.

The older Axis rifles all used the same stock, but they had two different "trigger guard" pieces depending if it was setup for long or short action magazines. As such you would need to change that piece if changing from a .30-06 to a .22-250 or vise-versa.

Newer Axis stocks are specific to magazine length - one for short-action magazines and one for long-action magazines.

The other thing, if switching from short-to-long or vise-versa, you'll need to rotate the front baffle 180 degrees as the ears are two different lengths to limit the set the bolt travel for long or short action rounds.
