Model 40/45 Super Sporter Magazine Article

It only took five years of searching, but I finally found a November 1997 (Volume 38, Number 3) copy of Gun World magazine. The article of interest was The Other Savage Sporter by Steve Comus. The subtitle is It Might be Called “The Forgotten 40”. The article is descriptive, informative and complimentary. He disses the 40 for its plain appearance and who can argue with that? I didn’t know that the action partially cocked on opening and completed cocking on closing. He states that this was the first sporter bolt action to accept a low mount scope without mods. I’ve lusted after the Model 20/26, but hesitated because of the difficult scopability. He liked the functionality of the cocking piece, a feature that I’m going to remember in the field. The only omission that I noted was his statement that the 40 had a four round magazine. I like my three rounders that sit flush with the receiver, but I still don’t know if they were optional or period specific.

Cool old rifles. Savages from that era seemed to be ahead of their time!! If I ever find one, I'll have to have it!

I recommend it! Mine is in 300 Savage, as a bolt action partner to my 99EG. I had one in 30-06, but I sold it. I got a good deal on it, but at the time I needed another 30-06 like I needed a hole in the head. Magazines are getting pricey, as are the receiver sights.
