This is a difficult place to be in. The Axis is not worth much as a rifle so it really depends on how much money you want to throw at it. It will not become a 1/4MOA gun without a LOT of effort so part of the question is what do you want from it? It will get you below MOA and maybe down to 1/2MOA depending on the barrel you choose and your shooting ability.

I have an Axis that I have modified (Walmart special .223 heavy barrel). Boyd's stock, McCarbo trigger, Diamondback scope. I chose to not invest a lot on the components (~$700) and it still shoots OK, under 1MOA with good loads. The scope is made in China. Hard to justify a $1000 scope on a $400 rifle.

As long as you are happy starting with the Axis then go for it.

I have 2 Savage axis's. Both are in Boyd's stocks with budget scopes up top. My .22-250 is a consistent 1 moa rifle with factory ammo. The other (.308) shoots about 1.25-1.5 moa consistently with factory ammo. The .308 has the mcarbo trigger kit. .22-250 has a cut factory trigger spring. For how much I've put into them, I'm happy. Charlie B is right, getting pinpoint precision is a very expensive endeavor, especially with a budget rifle. If that is your desire, be prepared to spend a lot.

The scopes up top are a Bushnell legend 4-12x40 (.22-250) and an Athlon 4-16x40 (.308)

I'm curious on what you want to accomplish with conversion to AI. Most 308 based cartridges tend to not have much of a gain when converted to AI.

Unless you handload, AI won't be much use.. I understand the rifle itself would be fine with STANDARD 7/08 ammo from any store, in a pinch - merely losing maybe 50 or 100fps? (Never tried it).

I'd say it sounds like a fun project as long as you keep it cheap. The huge plus with Savage - to me - is the damned bolt and barrel-nut. Swap heads, swap barrels: switch cartridges.. If you can swap for less than the coast of a new rifle, it's worth it to you; if storage space is a premium and you want those calibers, again - it's worth it to you. (I'm watchin' all you robbers trying to get NEW price from USED barrels! ;-)

And, if you really enjoy the gains and process, by all means, buy a better Savage - the 110? 111? Same bolts & barrels, I believe. Then you return the Axis to near original and sell her used - no harm no foul and someone ELSE has a starter to enjoy.

Remember: the Axis stock is an EASY replacement.. Boyds has some pretty stuff (I would love a thumbhole), And the Hogue Overmolded on my 06 is great, if a trifle heavy. It doesn't FLEX. Midway has those for Savage at under $150. Magpul similarly has stocks for the Axis, and MCIdefense has an adapter to the Axis stock. I remember the Axis had a nasty wiggle, so I'd replace the stock entirely. That can itself solve all accuracy problems.

Scopes? Meh.. I would spend more than a hundred or so.. Tasco has worked fine for me for 50 years. Almost invariably 3-9x because higher powers soar the price.
