Yes long or short action only refers to longitudinal length of bolt-throw (long or short bullets). Typically designated by distance between action-screws. On all Axis models it's 4.8". Which may be considered long-action or medium-action compared to other Savage products.
Diameter of barrel-threads is completely different. Here's dimensions for future search and ordering:
Small tenon is 1-1/16" x 20 tpi = starting major OD 1.063", after threads are cut and trimmed 1.055". Most common.
Large tenon is 1-1/8" x 20 tpi = starting major OD 1.125", after threads are cut and trimmed 1.115". Only used for some magnum calibres.
Easiest way to do this is:
1. cut 1.063"x20tpi threads on original 1.063" barrel
2. trim off tips of threads to 1.055"
This leaves tips of threads flat instead of pointed. Makes HUGE different in fit. If you get barrel that's threaded after being trimmed down, it will be too loose and won't be held properly by nut. Search around here for McGowen barrels that were done like this and sent back... multiple times.
You can see in this photo, light reflections off tip of threads, showing they're flat. So it's incorrect to say this threading is 1-1/16 x 20tpi or 1.055 x 20tpi, because it's neither.

Here's another close up of threads, note tips of threads are flat, not pointy.
