    B series rimfire

Is the B series a good rifle? looking for a cheaper 22 rimfire for pest control. I have several Savage centerfires and they seem to be a good, accurate rifle at a decent price but I know nothing about their rimfires.

I have a b series 17hmr that has given me nothing but trouble. But I do know of a decent number of people who's rifles are perfectly fine.

Luck of the draw I guess.

I shoot my B22FV SS ALOT. used it for ORPS competitions for a couple years now, it’s been reliable and performs above its price point. I love the flush fit mags the action is SMOOTH. Trigger is awesome out of the box. Other than replacing the ejector spring once (ejection got weak last season). I really can’t say enuff good about this rifle

Same here. I can only load two rounds in the mag or it won't feed.

Mine constantly misfires. It always has, usually 2 or 3 rounds per mag. I did some heavy cleaning and some polishing, that fixed it for a bit. Now it won't fire at all. I polished some burs off of the firing pin, and in the process I think I shortened the pin a little causing misfires... Over the weekend I soldered some steel to the back of the pin to restore length, hopefully this fixes mine.

I have a B22-FV (NOT the SR) and it's Very Accurate. I the first thing I'd suggest is to 'polish' all friction surfaces with at least 600g w/d paper. Then use PTFE grease very lightly for lube. The main trigger spring can be replaced with a 'Varmint' spring from Gunshack - it works even tho the 'lawyers' say NO. Or you can take the OEM spring and heat it with a Bic to barely orange-hot and allow to cool slowly. This will take away some tension and reduce the pull by ca 1# or so. The trigger-safety-blade spring can be replaced with ca 1/2 of a bic pen spring. I found the magazines have a sharp point on the loading gate so I filed it off. And the mag can be "Un-wound" to reduce the tension and ease loading. To 'improve' the bolt action I found it needed to have the 'guide-ridge' rounded to discourage dragging in the channel and on the 'next round'. Finally, on my rifle i have a 6-24x50 FFP Covenant-4 on Vortex Pro LOW rings, which gives about 1/16" clearance on the front bell. Hope these things help you.

Seems the smaller actions have some issues with feeding and extraction.
Seems to be either you get a good one or a bad one .
    Luck of the draw.
    Good luck.
If you weren't aware if it has to go back for warranty work it is on your dime.

From what I've seen/heard most of the feeding issues stem from the height at which the magazine is held when latched into the stock. The two I reviewed were both good to go, but the two A17's I tested suffered from this issue. My presumption is that Savage is likely using multi-cavity molds to make their synthetic stocks and one or more of the cavities has the mag retention shelf off just a smidge. Can't say for certain that's the case, but it's what makes the most sense given it's hit and miss nature from gun to gun.

I have to look and see the exact model but it is a wood stock.

prdatr - perhaps you could try temporary bedding the action with layers of 'real' duct tape - the aluminum foil on adhesive for a/c ducts. Put layers on one at a time to get different alignments. You may want to 'take off' the 'Fail' layers between 'tries'? or let them build up until the fit works? ALSO have you tried varying the torque on the action screws? And maybe clean the magazine - it may have mfg-debris stuck inside or dried grease.

I have B 22 magnum plenty accurate but it does misfire on occasion mostly first round out of the magazine, but it’s getting better.

As an update to my prior post.

I took out my .17 HMR B series last week and it performed flawlessly! I ran over 100 rounds through it with one failure to fire (dud round). My fix was to add about 0.040" of steel to the rear of the firing pin where the transfer rod strikes to send the pin forward. Mine was too short and was bouncing off the rim of the case. Now it hits with authority :D
