Is this for an Axis? If so it is a bit more complicated. Look through the stickies for info on how to do it.
I’m putting together a savage axis in 6.5prc. I need a magnum bolt head will one from a savage 10 short action bolt head work. I’ve had one or order from PT&G for 3 months and nothing yet. But I found one from a savage 10 short action mag bolt head. Just wondering if it will work. Thanks

PRC's belong on a large shank action, not an Axis.

Why they make them in 270 isn’t that about what the 6.5 prc is compared to??
The PRC operates at higher pressures, and with that fat case, it needs more steel surrounding the chamber.

I will be shooting it out of a full bull barrel. Isn’t the 6.5 prc a short action cartridge. I even think the axis comes in 300 win. I have a Howa 1500 in long action and the Axis is thicker than the Howa.
antlrbound, Understanding the issue very well and trying to clarrify what an accoumplished renowned Savage Gunsmith(Sharpshooter) is trying to convey is, the size of a short action case reduces the wall thicknes of a small shank barrel(read Axis) to less than .25". In his experience he believes that can cause issues and should only be done in a large shank barrel. By going to 1.125 thread over the 1.062(1.055 for reference) it adds an additional 1/32 per side. I would like to try a PRC but most of my stuff was 308 diameter so I can't personally advise you. Most of the guys, but not all on this forum listen when sharpshooter speeks. I will takethe liberty to state the biggest issue will be extraction Especially on brass fired more than once.
If you are looking for a bolt head right now, you could get a long action magnum and reduce the length of the nose to match a shart action bolt head. Maybe slightly shorter. The bolthead is .062" longer so firing pin protrusion will have to be modified by compressing the length of the spring by adjusting the firing pin stop. I suggest putting the pring in a cordless drill with some 80 gritt paper and reducing the spring od by several thousands of an inch.

Good luck.
I am sorry, I may have mispoke.
The Axis has a 1 pc. firing pin, so there is no adjustment.
There is a good reason that Savage didn't make axis rifles in magnum calibers, although there are a few obstinate souls who insist they've done it and every thing is fine.
Over 20 years ago when the WSM calibers came out, Savage chambered their first production run on standard shank barrels, and that when they realized that was a engineering mistake. They soon went to the large version. There are more than a few prefit barrel makers that will make make beltless magnum barrels on a standard shank because well, "If Savage made um that way , they must be all right". Evidently they don't know that even engineers can make mistakes....

So would it be better to build off a savage 110 long action??
I have one I could use but it’s a small shank as well. I even went and looked at some new savage rifles that were chambered in mag action and the were small shank. I even found some actions at J&A outdoors and they sell 110 magnum action using small shank. Thanks for all the advice. The one I have has the older adjustable firing pin. And the PT&G bolt head would work as well.
It would be best if you used a large shank action of any length. A short acttion that comes with a magnum bolthead from factory would be ideal. The Savage short actions have a liberal overall length magazine if using the factory savage magazine .
