Will be hard to track down. Savage does 'specials' for several distributors. I have an Axis II heavy barrel in .223 that I got from Walmart.
Hi, This is my first post. I am not a new shooter but I am new to Savage rifles. I purchased this model due to the great price, but cannot determine what it is. I've searched Savage, Google, this site, and dealer sites for details. Hopefully someone can help.
1. Is "heavy sporter" a specific barrel profile (vs. the standard deer rifle profile) and does someone know the specs?
2. What does (At) stand for in the name?
I've determined SI references the distributor (Sports Inc) but could not find a firearm distributor by that name.
Thanks for your help!

Some one had pawned a Heavy Barrel 22-250 at the local Gun Shop the other day. Again no idea where it came from.

Still trying to all the specifics, but found this on Sharp Shooter Supply, even thought the name is Heavy Sporter, which would indicate a 0.600 muzzle, mine measures about 0.710. Twist is still TBD. Emailed Savage a month ago, still pending response.
Barrel TurningWe can turn your barrel on a straight taper to any muzzle diameter you would like. Factory Savage barrel contours are as follows:
Sporter = 0.550" @ muzzle
Heavy Sporter = 0.600" @ muzzle
Predator = 0.720" @ muzzle
Varmint = 0.820" @ muzzle
Target = 1.00" @ muzzle
test post - have been waiting for admins to approve post for a week
If you are waiting for ability to post pictures it is best just to use an external photo website like imgbb. This is a budget operation and does not host photos unless you contribute to the site.
The simple answer to your question is you do not have a rifle that was in the Savage catalog. It was a special version made for a distributor. Very commonly done and some combinations are really much better than the Savage factory offerings.
As for a model type it is an Axis II with a special color stock and a varmint weight barrel. No special model number or designation.
They have no extra value over any other Savage.
Thanks. I had posted some additional information on this model (no pics). Once I hit post, there was a message that the admins had to approve before it posted since I was a new user. After a few days of not posting, I messaged the Admins, no response after a week. So the post you are responding to was just a check to see if I was cleared. My post with the additional information has not made it to the thread. Thanks for your help.
It wasn't there last time I checked but it is there now. Looks like I have the Predator profile.
I don't know why your 4.30.25 post was moderated, approved it moments ago. Don't visit the Axis forum very often since I don't have one and not interested in Axis related discussions.
As charlie b posted there are numerous "distributor specials" and trying to find out what "it" is will depend on the specs the distributor specified. You won't find it on Savage's site because it was not a standard Savage model.
Messages to Admin, one person, don't go to moderators.
Thanks PhilC
It's also possible it's been modified/upgraded for wear & tear. When mine wears out, I'm putting in thicker barrel.
That's what I did for a while. The .308 barrel off of my model 12 BVSS went on the Axis for a few years. Now it has the original .223 barrel back on. It will stay until I get tired of it and get a .22ARC/PPC. As long as it keeps shooting well below 0.5 I am happy :)
It's an Axis heavy barrel, they made them in several calibers. "AT" means accutrigger, and the designation of AXIS II also means it has an accutrigger. Were lots of options on the color of stock. You don't have anything special....

Thanks for the info!
Update - Spoke with Savage customer service, and they called the barrel "heavy sporter", however, named the dimension of the predator profile I mentioned above. "SI" does not stand for a distributor, but "standard issue" camouflage - I'm not sure about that, but it does have a weird tan/sage color pattern that I haven't seen before on Savage rifle.
I was pleasantly surprised by the helpfulness of the customer service agent (actually parts dept) who answered quickly, had a great attitude, and sent some parts at no cost due to the low prices ( 2 extra recoil lugs for future use in a chassis). A few years ago I had purchased a Savage 320 shotgun that was a mess from the start, and took 6 months and constant babysitting to resolve.
I was going to add a photo of the rifle but cant figure out how to attach a pic!
