    110 High Country

I have a High Country 300 Win Mag inbound. Will be using a Leupold VX5HD - 3x15. Was most impressed by 1) the rifles extra weight to mitigate recoil a bit, and, 2) the Accustock features. Looking forward to making it fit my shorter LOP and comb height. Handloads already assembled for early testing.

If you have a High Country and would like to share your experience with it - I'd appreciate it. Trigger? Accuracy?

    Thank you.

    Cheers.

I have a 30-06 and a 300 WSM High Country. My 06 likes 150gr SP's with IMR 4350 and groups are about 1 to 1.25 MOA, now the 300 WSM shoots between 0.5 to 0.75 MOA with 165gr SP bullets with IMR 4350. I did minimal load development on each; matter of fact for the WSM very little because I got lucky on my initial development. I have both triggers set at roughly 4 lbs. The 300 WSM is a real shooter out-of-the-box, I have shoot 1 MOA groups with factory ammo in the WSM. I push both of these rounds about 3000fps. I have killed 6 deer with 06 and 4 with WSM, all but 1 dropped on the spot. I have Vortex Vipers on both (06 - 6.5x20 and WSM 4x16).

UPDATE on the High Country 300 Win.

There was a time when I weighed 265 and could get my 338 Win and 375 H&H to shoot cloverleafs at 100. I'm now 78 - weigh 175 - and was confident I could manage a 300 Win in a slightly heavier rifle. Last Friday showed me I couldn't - not with any joy at least. :-(

The rifle and my loads? After a few rounds at 50 to sight in - at 100 my first 5 shots were all touching, well under an inch. NICE rifle. Never wanted or used a brake and won't hunt with one. Thanks for the thought.

Yes, of course, I could download it - but what's the point of owning a 300 Win? The very accurate 30-06 I traded in on this HC - I went back and got it.

    Growing older is a B***H.

While at the shop I retrieved a 110 Classic in 243 Win for all my Coyote hunting.

    Take care Ya'll.

    Cheers.

    Raz.......

Always learning here.....pls share what bullet you used in the 30-06 for your deer kills. While, of course, not always possible...a DRT is always my personal goal when I choose a rifle, cartridge & bullet for the game animal I will be hunting.

    Thanks.

Yep, many of us choose to not use heavy recoil guns as we get (got) older. I used to like the big bore black powder guns and heavier revolvers. First the revolvers went when my wrists started showing signs of permanent damage. Later I discovered that it was actually pleasant to shoot 100rnds in a morning from my smaller bore rifles. Even heavy bullets in my .308 are not fun anymore.

And my rifles have become heavier. The 10lb Garand is now my lightweight rifle and I am leaning toward a 20lb rifle next.

I concur Charlie for the reasons you gave. Thankfully, I can still handle my 30-06 with confidence. 8.5 lbs all up. :-) No flies on the 308 / '06 either. 60+ years of learning what does and doesn't work out here? Costly in terms of $$ - and richly rewarding. Wouldn't trade a minute of that history and the memories I have.

    Cheers.
