Help needed with Savage 99 breach disassembly

Got a new to me Savage 99 takedown in 250-3000 that's suffering from light primer strikes, so i took out the breech to see if cleaning the striker would help. But I can seem to unscrew the pin that holds the striker in place.

Am i missing a step here? I thought it was just a simple retaining pin that's screwed in ... do i need to do anything special to release it?

    thanks

How about a picture so that we can see exactly what you are talking about. I believe the firing pin is retained by a screw/pin called the hammer bushing screw. The one on my gun was staked in place but screwed out with minimal effort. Try soaking it with Kroil. If you can get it out be very careful that the small spring that retracts the firing pin does not go flying.

No luck yet .... it's very strange because from everything i've seen the retaining pin is a simple screw that keeps the firing pin in the breech block and should just screw right out. What's interesting is that i can only turn the screw about a quarter turn to the left, and when i do that, the firing pin seems "locked" ... i can't even pull the pin back against the spring.

Oh and I wish i knew how to insert pictures ...

Mine was staked but turned out with a little force. Has yours been really hard staked? Sounds like yours may be bent. That could make it bind when you try to remove it and could account for the locking of the firing pin. If it simply will not come out you probably will need to drill the head and extract it. The part is available from JackFirst.
