    Axis with SAV-1

Cross posted from the intro forum, figured I might get better traction here.

I recently purchased an Axis I in 6.5 Creedmoor from a shop that was going out of business (pretty good deal, especially for a lefty). Not being a Tupperware guy, I've already upgraded the stock to a Boyd's Prairie Hunter that I pillar bedded myself (not hard) and have added a few other pieces, bolt handle from Glades, trigger kit from MCarbo, and bolt lift kit from Desh. Future plans include a PTG bolt body and a Rifle Basix trigger. Currently it's topped by a Vortex Viper 2.5-10 HS. The main purpose of this rifle will be hunting, it's not a paper puncher.

Which brings up my reason for joining, has anyone installed the SAV-1 trigger, and if so, does the trigger pull adjustment spring really push on the 'safety slide piece'?? That just seems odd to me.

    Thanks for reading!

I guess I'd ask why the bolt body and trigger? If it is a hunting rifle the stock setup should work well.

If I hunted (I don't anymore), I'd rather stay with a safety blade trigger like the McCarbo. I have their trigger in my Axis and it works well. Mine is adjusted fairly low (1.5lb) since it is a bench gun.

WHen I bought an Axis back in 2017 the stock trigger pull was 6#'s. Way too much in a hunting rig for me. 2-3 is what I like.

This is why. Before the MCarbo mine was over 6lbs on my Wheeler manual trigger scale, now its just under three. I would like to make the break a little crisper, hence the SAV 1.

The bolt sleeve is mostly for cosmetic, but to also remove a little play in the bolt. Mine measures at .694, and the receiver is a tight .701. The .700 plug gauge feels really nice in the receiver, but I will probably order a .699 bolt sleeve.

A bigger bolt body will make it feel sticky, especially a PTG bolt body. They are not heat treated or case hardened. Typically the larger bolt bodies take up the slack, but at the same time eliminate the "float". I've seen many that shot worse after after changing to a PTG.

The play in the bolt doesn't bother me so I don't think about doing stuff like that. I got the entire McCarbo trigger for mine, not just the Axis 'kit'. The trigger pull is now just a bit more than the blade spring tension.
