    Winter rifle League, SE Wis.

Today we started our local informal winter league here in SE Wisconsin. It runs 10 weeks, shooting at varying distances of 100 to 300yds and each week we shoot a different target also. It is an open league of "run what ya brung" from 20cal to 30cal but must be a centerfire. Basic requirements are it must be scoped and must be fired from a front bipod and rear bag. There is no set time and date for shooting session which can be done anytime the range is open during each week, which at this time is Fri - Sundays. The league also limited membership at 20 members but it is quite diverse.

I have been shooting this for the past 3 years with a Savage in 223 and learned much with it. This year I have moved to a Savage 110 Switchback action that now has a Shilen Match barrel in 6ARC, Boyd's At-One stock and Athlon Argos 10-40X56 glass.

Today weather; 5*, Sunny, wind 7mph NNW. Shot at 100 yards using Offical IBS 100yd Hunter targets. 20 shots for total score of 200 points. To impart interaction, each target has 5 sub-targets which are to be fired round robin. After each 5 shot round shooter is required to make safe firearm, get up and go touch the back wall before shooting subsequent round, to be repeated after each round. All 20 shots must be completed within one fifteen minute session. W/O an offical score yet I counted unoffically 188/200.

    Thumbs Down Windy week 4

you were wise to not shoot today. It didn’t go well for me at all. Good luck out there tomorrow.

This is an informal league held at McMiller Sports Center in Eagle Wi.. Basically a private affair with no connection to the range, normally limited to 20-22 people. Very simple to organize as long as there is a range available and there is enough interest to sustain it. This one has been running now for 10+years I am told. Great comradery and great fun. Part of what makes this work is the honor system in that after the first week we are free to shoot our weekly target any time the range is open. So there is no set time or day one has to commit to. Shoot and have the RO sign the target.

Two weeks ago when I shot it was like 22* with bright sun/blue skies coming directly over our shoulders with a 10/12mph quartering cross wind from left to right. Dry, no snow but the mirage was horrible.

We shoot 56 targets that are commercially produced. Two of those are shot the same week, one is a Fish, the other is a Ground hog. The fish is to be shot from the weak side, both at 300yds! 3 are the IBS Hunter targets and one id a squirrels with 6 small bullseye targets.

The proprietary target we shoot are all ones that members have designed and then we have them printed. They have proven to be quite enjoyable by all involved. This league has a $80.00 buy-in and all monies are spent on this league so at the end of the year there is a zero balance. Monies are spent to print targets, buy a couple of trophies and the rest is awarded as cash prizes.

You will also see on our printed targets a BONUS target. We also run a bonus shot for those that wish to gamble a little more. $50.00 which works out to $5.00 per week. It is always just one shot. This year I hear 14 of the 21 members are involved with the BONUS.

I started printing my own targets several years ago. I use 60 or 80lb card stock. If I am shooting at 600 or 1000 I put a layer of butcher paper behind the target, so I can plot the fliers :) I take pictures of the targets and save them to a folder for that day's shooting, along with the chronograph data from the Labradar.

The two main ones I use are a grid pattern with the CBA score rings on top. For 100yd I put four on a sheet of paper (1/2" grid). 200yd is just one bull per sheet (1" grid). The other is a 'ladder' target with 10 'circle and X' pairs. There are a number of sites you can download targets to print, including the CBA web site.

Did you shoot week 5 yet? I decided not to try today, possibly tomorrow. I’m still traumatized :)

Just shot week 5 yesterday afternoon. It is shaped as a Maltese Cross divided into 4 scoring sections. Base is 5" wide. Shot at 200yds. Any shot breaking the outer perimeter does not score. Shots breaking the inner dividing lines scores the higher value. Subs are to be 5 shots, top, bottom, right left.

Final score was a miserable 146. Conditions when starting were 39*, complete overcast, direct headwind at about 13mph. That morning there was light rain and heavy fog on frozen ground.

Started out great. Shot 45/46 on the first 2 subs. Then had a 36 going on the right sub with the first 4 shots. Then instantly the could cover broke and I was in bright blue sky sunlight. Sun directly from behind washed out the target and the mirage got horrendous. Wind did not change. 5th shot went wide right into the 7 ring. Moved to the left sub and disaster. 5 shots, scored 10 points with one hit. the other 4 were outside or breaking the line.

Wish I could post a picture but there is one at THR or Accurate Shooter if anyone cares to look. Live and learn. This being my 4th year I have never experienced a weather change such as this while shooting.

I’m gonna give it a shot (pun intended) tomorrow. The wind has not been favorable this year.

Todays results for the 200 yard Maltese cross. I Think I scored a 163 today with one miss in the 1 triangle. After aiming for the 8/9 line and landing two shots in the 8 I went down one click and sent one just outside the 9 spot. Went back up 1 click and landed the next two in the 8 for a score of 32. In the 2 triangle I scored three 9’s an 8 and a 7(maybe an 8) for a score of 42. Triangle 3 was all five shots in the 9 spot for a score of 45. Triangle 4 was four 9’s and an 8 for a score of 44. Winds were 9 mph when I started but my windage flag had good stretches of just sitting still. Mirage was pretty bad at times. Bonus shot was right of the crosshairs but took out about half of the horizontal line to the right of center.

Week 6 targets are commercially printed. 2 targets shot at 300yds. 10 shots each target with 10-9-8 point scoring rings. One is a picture of a Ground Hog, the other is a Fish.. The fish target is to be shot from the weak side.

Shot a respectable 89 on the Dog and a miserable 46 on the fish with 5, yes 5, dropped shots. All five were bull high but 3" left.

Week 7 completed. This target is in the shape of a large S in the form of a Snake. There are 20 sub-targets in four size groups with the last 5 being 1/2". Format being that the First sub must be hit before you are allowed to move to the next on. Each sub worth 10 points with a limit of 20 shots to total 200 points.

My score for this target, 180/200.. I had to go inspect this target 4 times to assure a "hit".

Nice shooting. I’ve been knocked out for the last 9 days with the flu. Hopefully i’ll be back in action this weekend to get caught up. I’m hoping the range doesn’t close this coming Friday but based on similar days past, it doesn’t look good temperature wise.

I've caught that same flu. It sucks. Can't remember the last time I hurt this bad.

I was scheduled to work Friday but called so they can replace me for the day. Agreed on the closings because of the weather.

I got caught up on my week 7 & 8 targets today. I shot a 180 for the week 7 snake @ 100 yds and for the week 8 squirrel target @ 200 yds I shot a 194-195. The weather was ideal for shooting today. Not much mirage and very low winds.

Out shot me for week 8 then. I know I dropped 3. Sounds like our top spots are really tightening up for a finish!

Now I've had the creepin crud for the past 8 days.
