No surprises with the Nosler 6.5mm 100 grain BT

Ran a few into test medium today before the front arrived with its blustery north winds. Velocities at impact -- clocked a couple feet in front of each setup -- ranged from a high of 2597 fps to a low of 2135 fps, a window which would encompass most of my shooting with the 24" 6.5 Bullberry and the current load I am using.

At 100 yards and 2597 fps, the bullet still retained just over 60 percent of its original weight. Weight retention at the 300 yard mark, with an impact speed of 2135 fps -- was right at 75 percent. There wasn't much performance variation from low to high velocities with this one. Expansion was consistent with wide mushrooms and impressive wound channels throughout. The only real difference was that as impact speeds lowered, the bullet retained a bit more of its original length.

One thing I must note about the 300 yard impact: I had to move things to the right of my normal placement and did not range it, so I'm going to say +/- 5 yards on that one. But at least I do know what the chronograph read. Also, I was trying to hurry and finish before the weather arrived, so I did not measure depth of penetration, but I'll just say that it seemed just fine for any hog or deer I'll ever encounter.

And while I don't put much stock into energy figures, this load still packs over 1,000 ft./lbs. at 300 yards, which isn't too shabby for a 100 grain bullet in a Contender.

Looks great. 1000 @ 300 is not shabby. Are you ever going to put all of your notes into a book and publish it? I know you’ve been asked that before. lol I’d purchase a copy, especially if it had a photo of a dead pig on the cover. :)

I worked a hunting load for the 6.5 jdj using the 100 gr. BT. Unfortunately the bullet did not have the opportunity to meet meat.
