    Axis II recoil lug

Recently acquired a used Axis II in .300 BO in as-new condition. It came mounted into an MDT Oryx chassis and has an aftermarket extended bolt handle, probably Glades. It also had a JARD trigger with a very light trigger pull, and it was a good deal as a package. It groups well and the subsonic report is almost whisper quiet, using 200 grain bullets, 1680 powder and the Ultra-9 suppressor. But boy do those bullets drop between 75 and 100 yards. Not a good long range hunting solution.

After researching a bunch on savageshooters.com and learning how easy it is to swap barrels, and how the same long action is used on all Axis II's, regardless of cartridge, I began to ponder swapping the .300 BO barrel out for something else, since I have a Ruger American in .300 BO and having two short-range rifles in the same cartridge is redundant. (the ultra-9 fits on the Ruger, too)

So I removed the barreled action from the Oryx chassis yesterday and discovered two things.

    1) the recoil lug is missing and the barreled action was being held to the chassis merely by the action screws.

    2) the particular Oryx chassis I have, is strictly for the shorter magazine length, so I am unable to convert the rifle to shoot .30-06, unless I were to re-stock it.

Long story to get to what I'm about to ask:

I have to obtain a Axis II recoil lug, so two questions:

    1) Best to buy it from Savage directly?

    2) Is the lug clamped in the slot between the action and barrel, or will it just slide in there?

    Thanks,

    John

My lug just slid in there, which is why they are easy to lose. I have a spare for that reason. I'd buy it from anywhere that has them in stock.

Yes, stocks made for the Axis are short or long magazine. If you don't run a magazine then you can probably still use the stock, just put a sled in the opening to make it a single shot.
