    7mmBR to 7mm08

I just bought a XP100 in 7mmBR. I figured I would buy brass and dies and shoot it. Well, as most of you probably already know 7BR ammo and brass do not exist. So it is 6BR brass and size to 7BR. 6BR can be hard to find.

I already have 7mm08 dies and brass sitting. Would you recommend rechambering to 7mm08?

That'll work, but keep in mind that BR chambers don't always fully clean up when opening to 7mm-08. I'd leave it as-is. You can also make BR brass if you so choose. The process is straight-forward, but in some instances -- mainly when using .308 brass -- necks may require turning. But there are lots of affordable cartridge/brass options out there from which you can choose to make 7mm BR.

The 7BR has always been one of my favorite chamberings. A 120 grain Ballistic Tip will easily give you 2400 fps from an XP and will reward you with superb accuracy. H335 was my preferred powder for this one.

284 will clean up. Fuj has a wildcat out of the 284 that would work also.
I am sorry, I may have mispoke.

Bobby is correct about the chamber not fully cleaning up. I have one I purchased for just the action that was re=chambered to 7-08. If you look at the chamber in the light reflecting on the sidewalls of the chamber you can see the slight waves of the old BR chamber. I have two other XPs in the BR one in a factory stock and one in a HS stock. They are both superb shooters. I use H4895 for powder. I also have a factory 15" Encore 7 BR barrel which I prefer over the XPs for most of the shooting here in Iowa. I did stumble across a fellow that stripped a virtually unfired 7mm-08 from the Rem custom shop. I got the barrel but another guy beat me to the stock. My intent is to pull the re-chambered barrel and install a genuine Rem 7-08 barrel. Plus find a stock from the Rem custom shop. In your situation my opinion is that it is not worth the expense to pull and rechamber your 7 BR barrel not to mention the gain in recoil. There are still large stashes of Remington 7BR brass out there if you start digging . Most of the old silhouette shooters were camped out on large piles of brass. 50 pieces will last forever and you will be much happier.

Bobby T, you mentioned that there are lots of affordable cartridge/brass options out there from which you can choose to make 7mm BR. Other than 6br What are some of the others?

The .243, .260. 7-08 and .308 all are candidates. I haven't double-checked dimensions, but the Creedmoor family should work just fine as well and is what I'd check in to over the .308 family. Earlier year, I bought a bag of 100 Creed brass (Starline) on sale at BassPro for around $49. All of these require a bit more work than simply running a 6 BR case into a 7BR die, but for the savings, you really can't go wrong.

Yes, most of those I listed do have large primer pockets. But Creedmoor brass from Starline is available with small, which is what the BR was designed to work best with.

Also, Peterson 6BR brass is now available for a little over $1 each. I have not personally used it so can make no claims as to quality, etc. They made a few runs of 7BR, but I think that production has since been halted.

Lastly, if you use .308 brass, neck turning is most likely going to be required.

It has and according to Peterson customer service they have no plans of making any in the future. Necking up 6BR is the easy button.

Late to the conversation, sorry. I have 2 pistols in 7mm BR, an Encore and a SSP-91. I was able to buy about 100 rounds of Peterson brass and have found it to be an excellent product. Personally, I would acquire some 6mm BR and expand the necks. Cheaper would probably be some fresh .308 or .243 brass and go through the reforming process, more work and large primer pockets. Keep checking classifieds, 7BR shows up now and then.

Most of the time the chamber will not clean up. I bought one that was rechambered to 7-08 and you can see the ring from the 7BR in the reflecting light. Peterson just ran a batch of 7BR brass and has inventory on hand. My cousin ordered some and got it last week, he told me its nice brass. Lots of die sets floating around out there, the 7BR is a very nice shooter.

Midway is showing Peterson 7BR brass in stock for $62.99 per 50. I've got some Peterson 7BR and it has been okay for my uses.
