My heavily reworked Axis in .308. This'll be my first year ever hunting. I'm hoping for one buck and one doe.
...gun you'll be reaching for this hunting season?
For me, it'll likely be a Contender with a 22" .25 Bullberry barrel using the 87 grain Speer Hot Core at nearly 2900 fps. I got it earlier this summer and have yet to put a bullet into anything other than targets or test medium, so it needs to be christened.
I keep hoping a hog will show up soon, but I just might have to wait for "doe days" during whitetail season to try it out. The last two hogs I killed were in late May and early June, and I haven't seen sign of any rooters since then.
I haven't checked the Texas Parks & Wildlife calendar yet, but doe days usually take place over the extended Thanksgiving weekend. The general rifle season opens in early November, but we haven't seen any decent buck prospects this year. I'm not sure if range conditions are keeping the bucks away or if area hunters simply took too many last year. The fawn crop was good, and there are plenty of does. But the bucks have been noticeably absent.

Good luck! What load will you be using in your Axis?
I have an Axis in 25-06 that once belonged to my late father-in-law. Adding a Timney trigger and a Boyd's laminate stock turned it into the proverbial tackdriver. I've used it on several coyotes and a number of hogs. I don't shoot bolt rifles much, but this one is truly a pleasure to use.
Be sure to post some photos when you fill those tags.
i will probably take my Encore in 500 Linebaugh with 450gr LFN and HS-6. i have had it for a while and it is still not blooded.
That's a nice set-up . The 450 grain LFN should penetrate like there's no tomorrow.
Good luck!
Factory Hornady 165 gr SST. That rifle does 1 MOA consistently with that round if I do my part
It's better to shoot for the moon and hit the fencepost than to shoot for the fencepost and hit the ground!
That picture of your XP just screams "Bob Milek." I hope you can connect with it soon. Am curious if it is stamped 6x45 or 6mm-.223. It's been quite a few years, so my memory may be wrong, but I think the Contender barrel I had was marked 6mm-.223.
Good luck!
Bob T, you should return that for warranty. I can have it back to you by January!!!
I am going to start with the 30 Reece in the early doe season. 130 Hornady SSP load.
Thanks Bobby, it's very similar to Bob's gun, the only difference I can see is that Mr. Milek had white line spacers on his. The stock looks to have very similar grain flow to his as well. It's actually engraved "Trapper Gun 6-223" on top of the barrel.
Thanks for flipping the picture !

More than likely a Contender in 30/30 AI. It’s the only rig that is fully ready to go at this point. Seems like I’ve taken everything else apart for one reason or another, or I haven’t completed load development. I was totally sidetracked earlier in the year and still have not gotten back to my projects.
I may get the old Mission Ballistic out 1 more time. For the money that bow always surprised me. Accuracy and noise was way above the pricepoint.
Last time I took it out I had to decide on wether to get in position to draw, or keep on napping.
What part of Texas Bobby?
I am sorry, I may have mispoke.
Currently in the Moss Bluff area. Trinity river is close by.

Last year it was one shot, one doe with the 6.8 SPC carbine.
This year, I'm due to get the 30-30 AI Bullberry carbine out in the field. If I manage more than one hunt, I'll have to see how my 25-45 Sharps/Bulberry handgun set up works out for deer...I suspect it'll do just fine. :)
