Adjusting safety screw after installing a lighter return spring

I have installed a MCarbo trigger kit recently and have run into a fun problem. I installed the 2.5lb spring and one of the shims to eliminate left/right movement (I also ran lapping compound between the trigger and housing to eliminate any kind of surface defect). The safety works as is UNLESS I try to pull the trigger, release it, and then disengage the safety. Then the sear drops as soon as the safety is off. I've noticed that there is a few thousandths of play between the safety screw and the slide (the triggers moves just barely with the safety on), would it be appropriate to try and take out that very slight amount of play? Also, if I try to pull the trigger with the safety on, I can push the trigger very slightly forward, and the sear holds just fine when the safety is disengaged.

    Thoughts?

It has been forever since I played with an Axis but here is my philosophy with the safety and trigge spring adjustment.

First you want to slowly adgust the clearance of the safety screw until the safety no longer functions. Then you want to back the screw off in minor increments until the safety works. That will insure no trigger movement.

Next you want to adjust the trigger return spring untill the trigger contacts the sear in the open bolt position, then another 1/8 turn. Often when people are looking to get a lighter trigger, they overlook the need to have some trigger to sear preload.

    Good luck

Ok. Thank you for the reply.

One question though. The kit I installed has an over travel screw that the spring sits over. The spring does not thread into anything. Is it still possible to adjust?

I've been thinking about this and have another thought as well. I almost wonder if there is a little bit of friction between the hinge pin and the trigger that is causing the trigger to stick just a little. I didn't lap the pin. I'm thinking of doing that.

Did you do all this testing out of the stock?

The factory trigger return spring is adjustable. The Mcarbo is not.

After watching Mcarbos vid on your kit. If your trigger return spring is not capable of applying sufficient force to preload the trigger against the sear, you probably have a bind. The trigger should swing without any resistance.

If you installed shims on the trigger pin, this is where there is a potential for a rub. If I am not mistaken there is normaly about.0015" to .002" clearance on the trigger pin to trigger bore, so probably not an issue.

Both in and out. Same result. I thought maybe it was a stock issue since I have it in a Boyd's. But the results are identical.

That shim might be the issue. I'll remove it and see.
