Is a barrel change kits available yet? Will Savage chamber the Predator in 22 Creedmoor?

    Hello.

I'm a lefty and interested in the Impulse. I would like it in 22 Creedmoor but would also like to re-barrel easily for large game.
It's "supposed" to be a platform that's easy to swap barrels/calibers but it appears Savage isn't supporting that for some reason?.?.?

I could buy the 6.5CM for large game and re-barrel to 22CM for predators if someone makes a quick change kit.

Does anyone have any insight to this?
Does Savage ever respond on this forum?

    Thanks!
    Jason

I didn't know the impulse was "supposed" to be an easy barrel swap rifle. I am interested in the source.

Savage rarely if ever responds. Fred Moreo AKA Sharpshooter and the forum owner Jim Baker are as in touch with Savage as much as anybody and they respond often.
I am sorry, I may have mispoke.

As far as I know Savage does not suport changing barrels, You have to get You a barrel & change it all by yourself.

Sorry, I must have "assumed" that. Since it competes with the Beretta and Blaser.
I guess if I want a straight pull ambidextrous and modular "caliber swap" I'll have to get the Beretta BRX1.
Bummer! I really like my Savage 110's.
    ** Update BRX1 doesn't come in 22CM either

There's more than one guy on these forums who has changed the barrel on his Impulse. Once you have the parts, its not really worse than other Savage barrel nut rifles.

I've seen the threads and YouTube videos and it looks very straightforward and easy. However, if nobody is making or selling the barrel extension and recoil lug then having a machine shop make them would be cost prohibitive unless you have connectíons.

I scoured the net and could not find anyone who makes the parts needed. They may be out there but I could not find them. Sorry bud. We are just not there yet. I am curious how hard the barrel nut might need to be. 30, 40 RC? Harder? Would nitriding be the way to go? Looks like an interesting project. I have access to the tools to figure out what the factory did but I don't have a sample. And I don't run machines anymore so I am no freaking help at all.

Really doubtful that anybody will offer any aftermarket support as those rifles are not real popular......yet.

Hopefully Savage will include the 22 Creedmoor in the predator lineup soon and a barrel swap won't be as important.

Or maybe .019" will lose it's importance.

Since Savage already has a Predator model chambered in 22-250, they probably won't make one chambered in 22 Creedmoor.

    22 Creedmoor VS competitors

    I just ran some ballistics.

I used Hodgdon reloading data to get the highest velocities. I ran data for CFE223, H4350, Varget, Superformance and Stabal 6.5 because that's the powder I have on hand.

I used Hornady's standard ballistic calculator to calculate drop. These all have standard environmental conditions except I changed the altitude to 4,500ft (where I'm at).
These are all with 100 yard zero for equal comparison.
I used Hornady's new ELD-VT high BC bullet to keep things equal with the exception of the 22-250 which only shoots legacy style bullets so I use the 60gr. VMAX for it.
I chose a max distance of 500 yards because I doubt I could hit a coyote with a thermal scope much further.

Here are the results I got:
    22 Creedmoor 62gr ELD-VT, Superformance 47.7 @ 3653fps has a drop at 500 yards of____-27.8"
    22-250 Rem. 60gr VMAX, Superformance 43.0C @ 3738fps has a drop at 500 yards of_____-32.4" (-4.6")
    6 Creedmoor 80gr ELD-VT Stabal 6.5 46.6 @3338fps has a drop at 500 yards of__________-34.8" (-7.0")
    6.5 Creedmoor 100gr ELD-VT Stabal 6.5 49.0C @ 3373fps has a drop at 500 yards of______-32.7" (-4.9")

These results show the 22 Creedmoor drops less than these other cartridges by 4.6" to 7.0". That's enough to miss a coyote and certainly much more significant numbers than just .019" in diameter. in fact .019" makes the BIGGEST (-7.0") difference @ 500yards.
They also show the difference between a legacy cartridge like the 22-250 vs a modern cartridge, the 22Creedmoor. The 22-250 maxes out around the 60gr bullet weight, however the 22 Creedmoor can shoot up to 90gr bullets making it a much more versatile cartridge for big game hunting as well.

I wanted to upload the ballistics data from Hornady but I don't see where I can do that. (Probably don't have enough post to have that permission.)

I hope this helps illustrate why I think Savage and others should offer the 22 Creedmoor.

You want a 22 Creedmoor Savage rifle, build it.
Buy two barrel's though as you'll be burning them out to keep the 22 CM's ballistics listed.
Legacy cartridges are named so for a reason.
We'll see if the 22 CM has what it takes to become one.

Best if designed with barrel-swapping in mind from start. Ruger’s PC Carbine with takedown barrel design makes it very simple.

The legacy cartridges are awesome. However, they usually won't shoot the modern high B.C. bullets. That's the reason I am primarily purchasing rifles chambered in modern caliber offerings. Less drop and especially less wind drift is always an advantage.

I do really like Ruger rifles. However, as my op states I'm a lefty and the rest of my family are not. So the impulse is very appealing to me.

I just ordered the predator in 6.5cm. Now to decide on a 22cm barrel. I don't need high end, just Savage or better accuracy. I'm thinking 24" to get good velocity.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
