Savage 1899 Firing Pin Retractor

I have a Savage 1899 and the firing pin retractor keeps falling down, making it so you can not close the bolt fully. Sometime it will cycle fine and other times it will hang up after each cycle of the lever. I see a small hole to the rear of the firing pin retractor was there suppose to be a spring that went there?

Having a little trouble with your terminology. There is a small spring located in the breech block beside the left rear of the firing pin. That spring retracts the firing pin.

On a 99 there is a retractor spring. If you look at the diagram of the 1899 it’s depicted as part number 6 it used a manual retractor for the firing pin.

There is a light spring that keeps the front of the retractor pointed up so it will catch correctly when closing the bolt. I made one from a ball point pen spring using wire bending pliers. It doesn't have to be too strong; it just has to counteract the weight of the retractor's front. The 1895's used a thin flat spring and a slightly different retractor. If you hold the gun upside down the retractor should tilt so you can close the action easily until you can find or make a new spring.

Ahhh, Yes! . . . .
I’ve used these light springs many times . . . . .
When the Thompson Center Contender handgun first came out, a friend bought one in .223 Remington.
Damn thing wouldn’t shoot military spec ammo reliably . . .very light hammer fall, coupled with a fire-pin spring FAR to heavy/strong!
Solution: replace with a spring from a ball-point pen!
Problem solved!
