    Bolt face size

I have a long action I am going to use for a build. I just realized I do not remember what caliber it was when I bought the action. Where and how do I measure to figure out what size the bolt face head?

Got empty brass? If a magnum case fits, it's a magnum. If a 308 or 30/06 based cartridge fits and a mag doesn't, it's a standard bolt head. If 223 fits and the other two don't, it's a 223 bolt face. You can also put the serial number into the Savage Parts Finder and it'll tell you what caliber it was when it left the factory.

Good list David. What I was trying to figure out was where to measure the bolt head to figure out which of those sizes it is.

Hotolds442, I tried that and am not sure how it should fit. Putting in a 243 case, it seems to fit in, but there is a ring of brass visible looking from the end. Looking at the list above, it seems there are not as many different size faces as I thought.

If that is so, should be able to figure it out.

    Thanks

I got a little carried away with the list and forgot your original question. Oh look a string! From one side directly across to the other side where the shell case sits in. The ring you see is just brass transfer to your bolt face, normal thing.

David forgot the .440 bolt face. 7.62x39 family which includes the ppc family, the grendel family and i am sure there are a few more that use that bolt head.

Use a vernier caliper and measure the face distance on the inside of the bolt head. (Where the case would go.) Most experienced savage people can just look at the bolt head and tell you want it is.

The standard bolt face that I have in my hand right now measures .477
About .004 above the .473 diameter of a 308-30/06 based rim diameter.
