I have had good luck with 25gr Varget pushing 69gr MatchKings.
25gr. IMR3031- 50gr. V-max R-P brass cci primer 2.260 oal.
26" Savage 1-9 twist varmint
22" Savage 1-9 sporter
Have good luck using 23 grains of H322 and 50 v-max or 52 bthp's
52 gr hdy bthp with 26gs of win748
25.5 TAC with 52g Sierra MK
55gr Vmax with 26.6gr Win 748
24 gr. IMR 4895-60 gr.sierra varmenter hp, cci small rifle primer.
Out of 2 different rifles, 1 is a 20" model 10 LE the other is a model 12vss 26" barrel, they both shoot right at .25 on a good day and .19-.2 on a great day. 5 shots @ 100.
Goes without saying, safe in mine, work up in yours.
27gr Varget - 55gr Vmax - CCI Sm Rfle
Nice clusters at 100yds. As Always - work up. This is over the max load in the hornady book.
26.2 gr varget 55 gr berger flat base lapua brass win primer. This load shoots ragged one hole groups
In my savage and very well out of a dpms bull 20 with prepped lake city.
Thanks everyone for all the responses but lets talk about the elephant in the room anyone else working 53 vmax in a 1-9" ive got descent groups but not what I would have expected with the 290 bc and vld design thinking prairie dogs anyone else runnin these in a 223? And if so anyone have a great receipt with varget,h4895,or H322? I've run 200 through a sav-10 with 3/4"groups @100 being the best so far
Don't lean too hard on the B.C. Hornady is known to be a little...."aggressive" with their 22- cals ratings.
The BC also doesn't really have anything to do with groups.
Someone elses recipe will NEVER be exactly what your gun likes.
New brass 26gr H4198 mated with 40gr Vmax's 2nd firing and up 25gr H4198,
26 inch Mcgowan 12 twist,
no need to use the mil dots,
Lots O Fun ;D
Thanks Dean
...Been thinking about it , just never got around to it yet..lol...Powder will be Benchmark with LC brs.Quote:

This is out of my 1 in 9" twisted M4 and I haven't chronoed it, but it is quite accurate.
It is below max but I don't know what changing out components would do, so be sure to consult Hodgdon's manual, go to start and work your way back up if you decide to utilize.
I'm trying out some of that new copper build up powder this week w/ 55 gr NBTs... should be interesting...
@ darkker:
i have never leaned specificaly on what works in ones rifle will work in any of mine. however i do feel maybe your statement is a little skewed. Why is it that FGMM ammo works soo well in soo many rifles.. basic princables of ocw from my understanding. not trying to start a riot. I would have figured with as many barrel nut's as there are there on this forum that maybe someone else was working with these as most savage heavy barrels are 1-9twist and my guns all shoot 69smk's just fine but i dont feel they work well on pdogs. as the box says for paper only i shot many last year at 5-6 yards that got hole punched and crawed off im looking for a more... "explosive" reaction.. ive also heard they stabalize 40's but havent tried them as i like a multi-purpose load coyote/prairie dog and has to be extreme powders.
@1shot
if you do try this let me know how it works out please! i have shot 285 through my sav-10 with varget, H4895, H322 and still nothing "consistant enough" for my likings. used front rest and rear bag at 100 and thought these bullets would fill that gap i hate FB bullets so those are out, 40's seem to light on yotes for my likings these fit right in the middle. so far with this weapon 55NBT and H4895 have been the best yet. 53's dont shoot horrible just not great. Figured someone else had been there so i asked. im running lc brass cci-400 caps, so if you would please pass on any findings im gonna need around 4k bullets that work in all of my 22cals to take pdogin so extreme powder is a must for me as i load all year round then take them to 110* heat nothing like gettin 1k miles away and having useless ammo.
sorry for the long post i hope someone else has had better luck than i, i started .10 off the lands and powder in the middle of the road on each powder and worked up in .2 grain incraments to the top no pressure signs but nothing that just screams buy 4k of these to waste your time loading. At 200 yards they shoot 2.5" no thanks when 69smks do 1/2"on a good day 3/4" on a bad one
...Post 1 off your best targets with the 53's...Maybe I can help you walk it in.. ;)...Here's 1 of my 3/100 55gr NBT, 26.1gr Benchmark loads... ;D..

...On your H322 load go +.015 off & try that since you're in the middle of the load range..I like alittle faster powder myself.. I only use Varget for the Sie. 69's..
Thankya sir I will give it a try and post some pics soon as I get to the range
well 1shot you are a genius updates and thoughts??

Lol I know what youre saying but the 53's taper very harshly like a vld bullet and to get them into the lands or close I started out the ladder testing at 2.318 so I didn't develope a hot load and then jam lengthen the oal and jam it into the lands an have a boom no pressure signs but I have tried all sorts of seating depths with
These I started at above and tightened them
Up by .010 at a time I'll dig up my targets and get you numbers I use fosters searing dies so I'm very
Precise hand weigh every charge with a 505 rcbs vld chamfer flash holes deburred
..OK..You show 26.8grs of H4895 on your posted pic...Lets move that up to 27.2grs at 2.318 oal. Shoot one for 5 & post me the target...
Thank you 1shot I am waitin on bullets right now I started with varget because I have plenty of that and h4895 with the varget I started at 2.318 to 2.260 in .010 increments and with the varget at 27 with a tighter seating depth at 2.270 it would do 2-3" groups @100 I will try 27.2 H and the 53's when projectiles come in thank you so much for the help I appreciate it a whole bunch
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...253vmax272.png
as you requested seated at 2.318 27.2h4895 had very similar results with close to max charges with varget with no avail. went to the h4895 as a bit faster burning powder havent found anything yet. the H322 looks to be winning so far. advice please
and the top of the target is on the left side me and photobucket is about to have it out.
..How far off the lands are you at 2.318..?
To be completely honest I'm not 100% sure on this particular rifle I can usually size an empty fired and seat it long look for marks on the bullet take that measurement and subtract it from the oal of the cartridge bullet combo in question. I have a hornady aol gauge on order to be more precise I've gotten to far into this reloading to not have one but I will have. Still kinda green at it so for that I appoligize. I've gotten extremely lucky on my reloading endevers so far but this bullet is my white elephant so time to get help and work through it
...Well lets just push it out to 2.330 & try it again.. ;)Quote:

...Closing in on it...lol..Push it out another +.005 = 2.335
Lol I'd recon I should have a aol gauge by thursday I hope I'll take some measurements but keep push'in them out .05 at a time surely something's gotta work
Now since I don't have a chrono yet I have a question. Let's say a 53 grain bullet setted at 2.20" with H4895 bottom shows 25@3166 with the top being 27c 3383 if you move the bullet out further how does that reflect on the fps accuracy trumps all IMO but just curious to hear personal experience are you loosing fps by seating further out? I have read that a max load not stuffed
Into the lands and then seated into the lands causes a severe pressure spike resulting in yard sale material.. Just curious
...You still have plenty of room..It's not going to slow anything down....Now if you were jamming them +.010 in the lands it would be a different story..The groups will close up before that happens... ;)
Have it recrowned and try again
It's a brand new gun!? Well less than 600 rounds down the pipe why is it you think recrowning it will help?? I'm intrigued....
24.4, 69smk's as per picture, Savage BVSS, 9 twist
Still going to play with the loads a little, 24.3 to 24.5 just to see! VERY WINDY when shooting this group.
http://i957.photobucket.com/albums/a...7/DSC07218.jpg
...Go back to 2.330 & put .2gr more in it..Sometimes they can get alittle testy..Might just not like H4895..
I have seen two rifle that was recrowned shoot great that didn't not before and if you keep having the same problem I would send it back and ask them to shoot it . Remember even the boss can shoot 1200 yds lol
@deer.. Lol yea it like the 53's with other powder and it will print small groups with 69smks and H4895 so I don't think it's a crown problem just haven't hit the right mixture yet 1shots been helping me work it in as I was about to go with another bullet but the bc on the 53's are very good and @1shot will do and thanks again for all the help!!!
Lol some of the people on here are great and a lot of help it's kinda are own brother hood
Got to love this and the everyone ween I get my real computer going I'll well join the brother hood lol
