I have heard that you can change the savage/stevens guns caliber by changing the bolt and barrel.
But can you change a short action rifle into a long action rifle.
ex:308 to 30-06
thanks in advance.
NO
You can shoot LA rounds in a SA, (example 30-06 in a 308 action) but it will be a single shot and you would probably have to remove the bolt to remove a loaded round. I do know that an empty 30-06 case will eject from a SA.

Thank you looks like I'm gonna have to give this 308 a try. Cabelas was out of 30-06 in all savages and I let myself get talked into a 308 stevens 200.Originally Posted by bootsmcguire
there is plenty of capable short action calibers, 308 being one of them. definitely shoot the rifle before you do something drastic. you may find it to be the best rifle you ever shot
Is this going to be a deer hunting rifle? Target? Elk, Moose, mice ) ???Originally Posted by dac
Besides the 308, you can build a 358, 7mm/08, 260, 243, 22/250, 223 Rem and Ackley and many other short cartridges on your short action just by changing magazines and boltheads.

its gonna be a deer and maybe black bear rifle. It should work as long as I do my part.Originally Posted by skamaniac
308 is plenty capable. I use mine with a 150gr SST over Varget on deer with great success. I would think with a good bullet (Nosler or TSX maybe) it should be good on Black Bears, with good shot placement of course.

You're really not giving up much at all with a .308 compared to .30-06 on deer sized game at reasonable ranges. I made the switch a few years back, and love it. Less recoil, less muzzle blast = easier to shoot accurately for most people. Same selection of .30 cal. bullets, very easy to reload if you're a handloader. Only drawback, is about 75-100 fps less with comparable bullet weight vs the '06. The deer will not complain.
+1 on the Nosler bullets. I'm a big fan of the 150 gr. Accubond in both .308 and .30-06.
If Cabela's was out, try Wal-Mart. $397 for a model with Accu-Trigger and a passable scope and fully usable bases and rings. Available in .30-06 and .270 in LA and .308 and .243 in SA.
I wish my local "Wally World" still sold rifles/shotguns.

as do I. the walmarts in my county also stopped selling ammo, but they still sell ammo in the remainder of the state.Originally Posted by GaCop
