feed issues with .308 in long action

A friend and I are building our first savage rifles. We both bought long actions in stevens 200. While I am currently waiting on my 260 barrel we have been messing with his rifle. He has replaced his barrel to a 308. We have his gun headspaced with go gauges and no gos. The problem we are having is feeding issues. As the shell clears the mag it turns sideways some and catchs the inside of the gun and gets stuck. you have to pull the bolt back and make sure the gun is pointed almost straight down, then the shell slides into the barrel. He is using a 30-06 mag and follower. Is this happening to anyone else? Should we get short action mags and bed them forward in the mag well? Thanks for any help.

You are using a 30-06 mag as you stated, is that mag a Centerfeed or a Staggerfeed?
