    Stevens Build

Just picked up a Stevens 200 with the intentions of doing my first build. I want to make my self an accurate (long distance on the range, long for me anyway) and a decent hunting rifle at the same time. I am going to go with 6.5x55 as it has special signifigance to me, and is an all around great caliber that I am having trouble finding in a modern rifle that I like, plus I like to build things.

The rifle is currently a 30-06, will I need to make any changes to the bolt? Will a 30-06 serve as a good donor action?

My plan is to replace the barrel, stock, trigger, in that order, but is a new recoil lug something I should look at as well? Any other parts I should change as well? Sorry for all the questions, but first time around here so trying to get as much info as I can before I dive into this.

Bolt head and mag should be ok. The factory recoil lugs are stamped and as such can be warped. For no more than they cost, I say go ahead and get the lug. I would call Jim Briggs at NSS, I have two of the ground NSS lugs and hove no complaints. Also if you call Jim I would see if you can get a CBI barrel in 6.5x55. I love my CBI in 6BR and would definatly recommend the CBI.

If you want to get a lug faster,
Midway has a slug of them in varying thicknesses
bed the lug recess (neewb opinion)

If you are going to use this as a hunting rifle look at Boyds for stocks. Laminated or Walnut. The have a new stock design that is a Monte Carlo type that looks nice. I plan on 2, one for a Savage 110 and another for a Mauser. Under $100 and most are drop in or can be modified to take the new centerfeed Magazines.
