About a month ago a guy I shoot handguns with mentioned he had a 99 in 284 win. I told him I always wanted one but it never worked out. he then told me his son was the real owner of the rifle. Today he told me his son said go ahead sell the rifle. I asked him how much and he said $300 without the scope but would give the mounts rings and dies. I gave him the money sight unseen and will get the rifle on Friday night. Can's wait to see what I have, all I know for sure is it a clip model. How many models were made?
I picked up my new 99C .284 today it is pretty clean and on of the later 284. My 99 books from the 70s don't have serial numbers that late. It is 1,1xx,xxx. The barrel is the straight taper, but the trigger is gold and the lever case colored. My book shows the 284 discontinued before the straight barrel was introduced. ANYone have better information?
You need to post more of the serial number to date it. 1,1xx,xxx dates to 1966 / 1967. On the front of the lever attachment on the receiver facing the muzzle will be an oval stamp containing a number and a letter. If the letter is a T then it is 1966, if it is a U it is 1967. The number is just the inspectors ID number, the letter is the date code.
Need more help any clip model experts out there. The rifle is a 1966 but the barrel is a tapered with no good neck at the rear sight base. My book says these didn't come out until 1974 and it states the .284 was discontinued before that barrel type was made. Anyone have more information or thoughts on this. Any help is welcome?
My 99C in 284 has no raised boss at the rear sight and it is a 1972, I don't believe that my 99DL dom 1965 had one either. I finally got mine to the range and sighted in. I didn't have much luck about a month ago and couldn't get it to group. Took it home and removed the forestock and added an o-ring on the forearm screw stud to prevent the barrel from binding with the receiver. Effectively free floating the barrel. Next three shots from 50 yds could be covered with a dime, I'm pretty happy with that!
That's a beautifull rifle. Mine is not as clean and has a pad. I had only have only shot it with the reloads that came with the rifle. When I return from Mexico in the spring I will work up some loads. Thanks for the tip about floating the forearm i may try that on my 358 also. It looks like my 99 book has a few problems but it was completed in 1975 who knew?
The Murray's is an excellent guide, there are a few items in there that don't follow exactly what is written. With savage never say never! The wood has been replaced on mine. I didn't like the pressed checkering wood that came with it so I picked up this 90's vintage new never installed wood which makes it look a lot better. Life is too short to hunt with an ugly rifle!
