How to Lower Stevens 200 Trigger Pull?

Just Bought a brand new Stevens 200 in .270.... Seems to shoot pretty good groups. I need to get a better scope and replace that awful tupperware stock.

In the meantime is there a way I can adjust the trigger? I think I need to back the adjustment screw out but I also heard that I can replace the spring? Where can I get a replacement spring?

There is a screw that the end of the spring sits in. Back that screw out (or in) to change tension on trigger.

If your going to use wire ... make sure its shaped as per the original and that it maintains pressure on the small bar at the rear of the trigger at all times no matter how the rifle is positioned. Otherwise ... it will refuse to cock at times.

If you trust yourself to not go overboard, you can also stone the sear engagement. I've gotten several down to about 2lbs. Just gotta make sure it's safe. You can easily go too far with the stoning.

    Try this. http://www.varminthunters.com/tech/savage/

This is just gonna be my new deer rifle for 300 Yards and less shooting....

Wanted something a bit different from the usual 30-06.

I'm looking to save as much money as possible and make this a somewhat "Budget" rifle. Yet I want submoa groups, and a nice crisp trigger that breaks around 2.5 lbs.

I'm afraid the stock is going to have to be replaced... I've been looking at boyds thumbhole stocks. Cant decide between synthetic and wood. Love the look of wood. Love the reliable accuracy and durability of synthetic.

So if I replace the trigger spring and back the adjustment off can I get it down to 2.5lbs without messing with the sear engagement?

You might give Jim @ northlander a call and look at the 3 screw trigger for a hunting trigger. It will surprise you for a factory trigger

Replacing the trigger wire and backing the tension screw out some will certainly reduce the pull, but those Stevens triggers are gonna have alot of creep. That's why, if it were me, I'd do a little stoning. But that's up to you. Can't hurt to do what you've already planned. It might just work for you.

I have not messed around with triggers much yet. Can you take a Stevens 200 and put an accu-trigger on it. Surely someone on this board has one for sale. I wouldn't say an accu-trigger is the best thing going but it does the trick for hunting. Maybe not the best choice for a comp. benchrest gun.

If I have never messed with stoning the sear engagement before do you think I could do it with online instructions? I just dont want to mess anything up.

Re: How to Lower Stevens 200 Trigger Pull?

Yes, you could mess it up, that's always a possibility. I used the above posted instructions to work my factory 200 trigger to almost no perceptible creep, and about 3.5 lbs. pull, which is perfect for my deer rifle. If you don't have the tools, experience, steady hands, and the patience to work yours to where you want it, the factory 3-screw is probably your best and least expensive option.

Whats the price on the 3 screw trigger? I might try changing out the wire and backing off the screw for now until I have a bit more cash. A new stock and scope are priority over the trigger.

Re: How to Lower Stevens 200 Trigger Pull?

If Northlander has any 3 screw triggers left, I believe they were $35-40. You'll have to call him to make sure though. SSS should have them as well.

For all the screwing around ,fet a jard and be done with it. At least you get a new sear with the jard.

Re: How to Lower Stevens 200 Trigger Pull?

Make sure that whatever trigger you get can be adjusted to a good weight for a hunting rifle. Those triggers that adjust down to ounces aren't necessarily the best for a hunting use rifle, those are more geared for target/benchrest stuff. I don't know about you, but a 1lb. trigger on a hunting rifle seems more than a bit on the dangerous side. A crisp 3lbs. is gonna be miles better than what you have.
