200 long action

I'm new to this forum and have never owned a Savage/Stevens before. I bought a M200 in 25.06 and am thinking about mounting a Nikon Prostaff 3-9X40 on it. Cabelas has them for around 100 bucks. I know they aren't the best scopes made but gotta watch our budget. Is the scope barrel long enough for the la? Also, what mount and height rings do the folks that have a similar setup recomend. I plan on staying with the plastic stock and the factory barrel for at least a little while. At some point I will most likely get a after market heavy sporter. Not sure about the stock yet. Man, I love this site. It's a whole new world for me.

Hi for 100 bucks SWFA has vortex's on closeout that's what I have on my 200 in 25-06.

i was kinda wondering about that vortex for 100 bucks and how it held up to the recoil of the 25-06. also is the 6x a little much in the woods?

The scope is a bit short for the long Stevens action, but a one piece base or a Weaver extended base (#402m) will work. If the rifle is to be used for deer hunting, the 6-24 wouldn't be my choice. Not because 6x is too much for the deer woods, but because a 6-24 is a long, long scope and the Vortex has a 50mm bell requiring extra tall rings. That makes for an unwieldy deer rifle.

The Prostaff is a good scope for the $100 closeout price. Nikon has upgraded the Prostaff line. They now resemble the Buckmaster line with better lens coatings and finger adjustable turrets.

Hey I have one on all my Steven's 200 25-06 270 30-06 300 winmag and they all have held up fine, and with those thin sporter barrels med rings work and as far as the 6x I guess that's something you get used to.

i have plenty of other rifles to deer hunt with but its just hard to walk past my 25-06 and pick up a different one

You can use the DNZ mount, it gives you a little more mounting room. Note the picture the rings are right up against the port instead of centerred over the front and rear of the reciever. If you want to stay with Weaver style rings you can get one piece bases with multiple cross slots for ring positioning.

i have both sets of rings and mounts so thats really not holding me up. really would like to hear about field of view in the woods because i know im not gonna walk past my 25-06 come deer season.lol

also for the budget minded there is a 2 piece base that has 2 slots for mounting a short scope barrel on a long action. found them on ebay for $8 plus shipping

I really do favor the Nikon I mentioned because I have an Omega on my muzzel loader. The low light thing is amazing. Late in the day I can see into the dark corners of the woods and shadows like it was almost broad daylight. Just my personal like for a scope. What will it take to make that that work on the long action? Building one is fun stuff!
