1899 ID

I read all of the archives, and "FAQ" pages, and while I can find general descriptions of the various models, it remains unclear, in an absolute sense, what model I have. I think it is an 1899A, but I am not sure. Any assistance with this would be appreciated.

Stamped "Sav.303" top-dead-center of barrel just ahead of receiver.

Serial number 77.500. (A "." not a "," between the 7 and 5)

26" round bbl.

Crescent buttplate.

"Points" on stock aft of the receiver.

Schnabel forend.

Small "2" on left side (AS YOU LOOK AT IT) of receiver under forearm.

Upper case "R" on right side (AS YOU LOOK AT IT) of receiver under forearm.

"Hi Pressure Steel" stamped on barrel.

"Model 1899" stamped on barrel.

Last Patent year 1899.

The rifle is in good condition, with the bore in excellent condition. However, I would like to have it restored by a professional. If anyone reading this knows of such a service, I would appreciate the contact information.

I'm not interested in finding some "Antiques Road Show" treasure. I am simply interested in the specific model number of this rifle. I will contact Savage Arms Corporation regarding a "letter" with detailed information. Until I do, I would appreciate the assistance of the experts here.

PS - I'm also interested in finding that rear, tang-mounted peep sight. Any help on where to find one of those would also be greatly appreciated.

Date of manufacture 1907, model is an 1899A (A = round barrel, B = octagon barrel, C = 1/2 round 1/2 octagon barrel all 26" long barrels). Restoring will kill any remaining value or collector interest and being a 303 sav you either have to reload or have deep pockets to use it as a shooter. My advice would be clean it up and keep it as it is. A professional restoration will cost thousand and not increase the value anywhere near the cost. Tang sights can be found on eBay on occassion.

I'll keep an eye out for the sight on ebay. Is there no one like Buffalo Arms or Track of the Wolf, (I list those only as examples of places that sell obsolet stuff), that has these?
